Gun rights event canceled
Daily Record/Sunday News
Updated: 05/05/2010 07:06:31 AM EDT

A gun rights event planned Saturday at a Manheim outdoors club has been canceled.

The event, LiveFreePA, will be rescheduled for the fall, according to the website for the Commonwealth Foundation, the Harrisburg-based advocacy group that is sponsoring the gathering.

Attendees were to fire off rounds at a beaten-up vehicle representing "liberal policy ideas" Saturday at Elstonville Sportsman's Association.

3. On a couple of levels...
Firstly, I was never a huge fan of shooting at cars. There is the very real threat of a ricochet when you shoot something like that. Then you have to deal with the broken glass and stuff after you're done. The idea of having a range is to keep the rounds on the range and not whizzing off to the neighbors.

Secondly, shooting at something that is intended to be an effigy of a political movement, while probably protected speech, is really not that great of an idea. It promotes violence as the solution to a political problem. It also makes the group holding the event and anyone remotely associated with it look like a bunch of wahoos.

Either way you slice it, that's not a rally I'd want to be anywhere near.

2. Maybe they need more time to study maps to get to the event.
