NRA Convention Causes 45% Reduction In Crime

Wow. Crime was already down 19% dropped to down 45% during NRA convention week. Often a large convention will attract crime due to the huge number of tourists and their money.

Do you think it is possible that criminals knew that these were NRA types and might be armed?

Is is possible that thugs don't want to get shot?

Now that the NRA is gone, the streets will be safer for thugs once again.

One does not find many muggers on any convention floor. Conventioneers tend to also go other places in a city as well as the convention. It is at some of those "other places" that criminals attact attendees. Crime in those other places was down by 45% as measured against the same week last year.

Whereas the NRA annual meeting draw around 70,000, and they were there all weekend.

Still, I tend not to put a lot of stock in "compared to this same month/week/day last year" comparisons. The datasets are just too narrow to draw any useful conclusions; there's just no way you can tell it wasn't a fluke.

The NRA is a single issue organization. Guns. They take no stance on any other issues and will support any politician who is pro-gun. The are Democrats with "A+" ratings from the NRA.

The only three I can think of are Harry Reid, Bill Richardson, and Howard Dean (who lost some of his shine with gun owners during the race to be the dem nominee.)

Hell Obama signed a law allowing people to carry guns in national parks, and these douches are still claiming "he's gonna take yer guns!". Giving to them is no different than giving to Teabaggers. Obama's administration has made some missteps on guns. In Feb 2009, Eric Holder came out saying that just as the president had said during the campaign, he wanted a permanent reinstatement of the "assault weapon" ban.

From the NRA's perspective, their choice of speakers has to do with draw. Would the NRA attendees even know who Mark L. Doumit is? Is Mr. Doumit a nationally known figure? No?

I support the NRA because the NRA supports politicians of any stripe who are behind the second amendment. The 2004 endorsement list helps prove that they're not a 'teabagger' organization.

When the NRA separates itself from the crazies I'll respect them. They have not been worth respecting since the early '90s.

My husband is an immigrant and joined the NRA as soon as he got here. He dropped hi8s membership when they sent out letters bitching about immigration. Fuck all to do with guns.

A ban on the .30-30 would have banned ALL common hunting ammunition. Since Kennedy wrote the amendment, and since he specifically named the .30-30, then we must assume that he did intend to ban the .30-30, and ALL hunting ammo.

FWIW - An NRA endorsement is valuable in an election. It does carry signifigant weight, and is enough to swing some elections.

It may come as a shock to you, but there are plenty of Democrats west of the Great Plains (California excepted) who get passing grades (C and better) from the NRA-PVF. Political positions on gun control are correlated much more strongly to region than to party affiliation. Is Bill Richardson more right-wing than Rudi Giuliani?

might've just been a low-crime weekend just as easily as a high crime weekend :shrug:

OTOH, I am surprised that tens of thousands of people went to one area and the crime did not increase. One would expect a rapid incrase in population density to increase human interaction events which tend to also increase crime rate. Especially when all the newbies are tourists or out-of-towners travelling with valuables/money.
