Ohio park ranger shot in face by hunter
An off-duty park ranger was shot Thursday morning while hunting near Alum Creek State Park. The ranger, whose name has not been released, was hit in the face by shotgun pellets from another hunter, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and ODNR responded to the scene of the incident following a 911 call shortly after 9 a.m. The incident took place on state land near Hogback Road where the ranger was hunting turkeys. It occurred in a designated hunting area.

The injured ranger was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital and he is in stable condition.

6. Hunting is still safer than highschool football.
Hell, it's probably safer than highschool cheerleading.

8. Ban Ohio. Ban park rangers. Ban Hunters.
It's the only way we'll be safe.

9. Bit of a misleading headline
Edited on Sat May-22-10 09:43 AM by Euromutt
The ranger was off-duty and hunting turkey, which means he was almost certainly heavily camouflaged (unlike deer, wild turkeys can see orange) and remaining immobile. It's pretty difficult to adhere to rule #4 ("be sure of your target and what is beyond it") when a person in the background is actively trying to not be visible.

So probably no malice intended, and it's arguably even a stretch to call it negligence. Just an accident, that's all. Let's be glad nobody was seriously hurt.

18. We've had a similiar problem
Mostly of New Jersey hunters coming into Pa and blasting anything that moves. Several hunters got shot last year. Im not a hunter anymore, but ive gone before for turkeys. I can easily see how this could happen. Be sure of your target. Doesnt sound too hard does it?

19. My uncle is *from* PA, and won't hunt there anymore.
He claimed that the locals were just as bad as the out-of-staters. Last I heard, he switched to going on guided (*not*
canned) hunts in Minnesota and much preferred it.

22. And the point is???
Accidents happen. But then, you are just here to stir the pot, right?

I personally vote that we all just start ignoring off-the-handle's drive-by op's.

Why waste DU's bandwidth?
