Why Gun-Controllers Suddenly Love Bush's "Terrorist Watch List".
Edited on Sun May-15-11 08:17 AM by GreenStormCloud
They love it because it is so extremely inaccurate. As noted by others, the list is NOT a list of specific individuals, but it is a list of names and partial names. Since Joe Smith is the most common name in America, then I am very confident that there is a J. Smith on the list. So any Smith with a first tame that starts with J. is on the watch list. That is likely to be over a hundred thousand Americans, banned from buying guns because their name is similar to one on the list.

How names get on the list isn't public information but I would bet the Senators and Congresscritters that are trying to turn it into a "No-guns-for-you" list know how to get names on the list. If the list were to be turned into a "No-guns" list then you can bet that they would be manipulating the list to include as many different names as they could. They could ban millions of solid Americans from buying guns with no legal recourse for those citizens.

For those who wish to ban as many gun sales as they can, regardless of the individual's rights or of the consequences, it would be a dream come true. For the rest of us, it would be a nightmare.

It has nothing to do with hindering terrorists and everything to do with an attempt at a backdoor gun ban.

1. Doesn't seem to be the case.
http://slatest.slate.com/posts/2011/04/28/terror_watch_list_.html

Just because the government suspects that you have ties to terrorism doesn’t mean you can’t buy a gun.
Nearly 250 people on the government’s terror watch list purchased guns in the United States last year legally, the Associated Press reported Thursday, citing FBI figures they had obtained.
How’d they do it? They went about it like anyone else would, background check and all. The government can prevent people from purchasing a gun for 11 reasons, but being on the watch list isn't one of them. Convicted felons can't buy weapons, but the watch list includes people suspected of – but not necessarily convicted of – ties to terrorists.

2. Sorry. Favor gun control . Hate the watch list.
Hate the No Fly list.

Even telling me these rotten bureaucratic nightmares are a backdoor gun ban doesn't make me like them. I want front door gun control.

Take your assumptions and feed them hay.

7. Take a look at the threads here on DU, and at bill introduced into Congress.
A lot of your fellow gun-controllers are in love with the Bush list.

21. Then you're one of the principled ones
And good on you for that. I might disagree with you, but I won't accuse you of underhanded tactics. Problem is, there's no shortage of people--including Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Representatives Peter King of New York and Mike Quigley of Illinois--who do want to employ the Selectee and No Fly Lists as a means to a backdoor gun ban.

If you take issue with their methods, don't complain to the Gungeoneers; we already oppose their tactics. Complain to them.

19. I wasn't. Banning guns trumps all to them. They will lash about for any tool they can use
If they could shred the constitution they would as long as it also means guns are outlawed.

22. Don't be sorry, you're right. Worshipping a gun as a god would be a cult.
Unfortunately that doesn't ever happen in real life.

Perhaps you're thinking of the people from beneath the planet of the apes? And that was bomb, not a gun.

What does the great oracle Brady have to say on that movie?
