More travelers trying to carry on guns at Salt Lake International
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=15695749

A surprising story at Salt Lake International Airport: more people are trying to take guns through carry-on security there than any other airport in the nation.

No one know why it happening, but airport officials want it to stop.

There were 22 cases last year alone, with 35 people arrested for firearms violations. There are have already been seven incidents since the beginning of 2011.

Airport officials say the most common excuse travelers give is that they simply forgot to check their firearms. Even though Utah is a strong state for gun owners' rights, attempting to carry a gun onto a plane is not going to fly, officials say.

<more>

maybe it's the water?

1. A friend of mine was fined 8k for a disassembled gun at customs last year.
He went to jail for a day or so, then back to face trial and pay a fine. They found a disassembled pistol in his SUV he'd just forgotten about...I suppose he learned his lesson.

I said the wrong thing once that got my car and person searched going into canada....always say sales call.

14. Yes, jpak...
...I'm sure you've NEVER forgotten about something that could be potentially hazardous to your own or others health in the entirety of your existence. You are a blameless, holy creature that is above reproach. This gives you the authority to cast down judgment on the rest of us mere mortals.

4. Anyone know what airlines will let you carry weapons in checked
baggage? I think United will. I am sure there are procedures and restrictions.

10. You have to be careful in routing your flight.
The 86 FOPA (you remember that one-where they slid in the Hughes amendment at the last second and closed the NFA registry) was supposed to protect gun owners from arrest if they were travelling with a firearm. If your home state and the state you were headed to had similar gun laws, provided your gun was unloaded and secured in between, you couldn't be arrested for passing through.

Now places like airports in places like NYC and Chicago have recently had cases of people being arrested who were travelling and had to change planes. Their baggage gets flagged by the super-alert TSA and since, obviously, someone from Maine, travelling to Texas for a hunt doesn't have an FOID or NYC permit, good luck fighting those felony charges and mandatory jail terms.

8. I think almost every domestic carrier will let you check firearms.

I've done it on Delta, Airtrain, Continental, USAir, and I think Unite.

12. I thought they all did
But then the only time I took a gun on the plane was an M-16 on a business trip to the middle east. Yes, all of you antis, it was a true assault rifle with 30 round mags. You were also part owners. After all, you did chip in to buy it (US antis only).

13. Son in law is TDY to Bagram and checked his issue sidearm.
He is still there, so I have not heard if he had any trouble. He went commercial to Kuwait. Did not know about the problem with airline transfer in places like NYC and Chicago.

18. Pretty much all airlines allow firearms in checked baggage.
The rules are fairly standard, with minor variations by airline usually on amount of ammo you can check. Each airline will have it's rules under their baggage info on their websites. TSA rules are here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm

When service members fly for deployments, they follow all the same rules, whether going commercial or military air.
