Widow Says She Killed Lane
Widow Says She Killed Lane

Compiled from Ledger wire services

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The widow of NFL running back Fred Lane pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter for shooting him to death three years ago as he walked into his home.

Deidra Lane could get more than 19 years in prison. Sentencing was set for an unspecified date in September.

"I would like to apologize to the Lane family," a weeping Lane, 28, said at the hearing Thursday. "I'm sorry for the loss and the pain this has caused."

Authorities said she ambushed her 24-year-old husband at their Charlotte home in July 6, 2000, hoping to cash a $5 million life insurance policy. Lane and her attorney had said she was a battered wife who acted in selfdefense.

2. Another home made safer by guns
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will plug their spouse for the insurance money...

3. Oh come on now
I thought it was the guns that killed people.

The article should read;

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The gun pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter for shooting him to death three years ago as he walked into his home.

The gun could get more than 19 years in prison. Sentencing was set for an unspecified date in September.

"I would like to apologize to the Lane family," a weeping gun said at the hearing Thursday. "I'm sorry for the loss and the pain this has caused."

Authorities said the gun ambushed the 24-year-old husband at their Charlotte home in July 6, 2000, hoping to cash a $5 million life insurance policy. The gun and it's attorney had said it was a battered gun that acted in selfdefense.

I guess Deidra Lane should be excused of her actions, since it was the gun that caused his death.

6. Yes, There Was a Point
To show that for every story posted to "justify" the use of a gun, one or more can be found proving the opposite.

7. The difference?
This story demonstrates the ILLEGAL use of a gun, i.e. murder.
The stories you refer to that "justfy" the use of a gun demonstrate the LEGAL use of a gun, i.e. self defense.

11. You don't think she could have...
...figured out any other way to 'off' her husband? If a spouse wants the other spouse dead they'll figure out a way.

9. Where is your proof?

There is no real way to accurately track the use of a gun in self defense. This is because the majority of the cases are never reported because a shot was never fired. Example: If you feel that your life is in immediate danger and you draw your gun on the suspect in an attempt to protect yourself or others and he or she decides to flee the seen rather than run the risk of being shot then you just successfully defended yourself. In this type of situation why would you ever need to report it? Nobody was hurt and there is no suspect to arrest. Only common sense will tell that this type of situation happens more often than an actual shot being fired. I've used my gun in this exact same manner and I never called the police because there was nothing to call about. So to correct you, most of the time someone does not end up dead. Think about it.
