Crime fighter charged in U.S.

The police officer couldn't believe what he saw in a northern Michigan forest one afternoon in April, 2002.

Midway through a grisly murder investigation, he had followed the world's best-known cadaver-sniffing dog, Eagle, to the edge of a stream he had just combed for evidence. According to the officer's testimony, he saw the dog's handler, Sandra Anderson, pull a piece of bone from her boot and put it in the water.
"Check by my foot," he remembers her saying.

The next day, another investigator watched her do the same thing. The two officers took their account to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Yesterday, the U.S. Justice Department brought 10 charges of evidence tampering and obstruction of justice against Ms. Anderson, a 43-year-old Michigan native. The charges involve two murder cases, both in Michigan in 2002. If convicted, she could face 65 years in prison.
