Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

"Officials at University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy received a scare Wednesday after a student apparently brought a gun to school.
A ninth-grade student at the all-male private Catholic high school showed the gun to some other students, who immediately reported the incident to faculty members, according to Local 4 reports.
"Today was actually a good day for the school in the sense that there was an incident involving a student and a weapon, but our students responded immediately and let us know -- the administration, faculty and staff -- and we were able to find the gun and the student immediately and take care of the problem," said Rev. Suicide shootings, both successful and otherwise, are often portrayed as "games" or "accidents" because of the stigma of suicide and the possibility that health insurance may not cover expenses from failed suicide attempts.

"Two men were killed and two children were injured after an early morning shooting in Highland Park.
The shooting occurred on Ferris Street, near Oakland and Brush streets, just after 2 a.m., according to Local 4. Investigators said the four victims were sitting in a car when someone drove up and started shooting.
About 50 shell casings were on the ground, which investigators believe came from an automatic rifle and possibly a shotgun.
One man tried to run from the car, but died at the scene; the other was pronounced dead at Henry Ford Hospital, Local 4 reported.
The children of one of the men -- an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy -- are hospitalized. The girl was grazed by a bullet and the boy suffered a gunshot wound to at least one of his legs, Local 4 reported. "

"Seth Bange, 21, has been charged with one count of attempted murder, and Ernest Moore III, 28, with one count of felonious assault in the shootings of 19-year-old Devon Peebles and Michael Taylor, said Chillicothe Police Capt. Tom Hewitt.
The two suspects were to have been transferred to Chillicothe after a hearing in Columbus either today or Wednesday night.
Taylor was taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus after being shot three times in the upper chest and torso. Peebles was shot once in the chest and taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where he was treated in the emergency room and released. "

"MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A Florida Institute of Technology secutiry guard was found fatally shot on campus early Thursday.
The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known, said Lt. Steve Fernez, Melbourne police department's lead detective on this case. Fernez could not say whether the shooting was a homicide or self-inflicted, or whether a gun had been found at the scene.

Five Missouri Militia members answered the call of Ranch Rescue, a group founded in Texas that became the first organized civilian patrol to set up camp on the Arizona border. The group's stated mission: to protect private ranch property. Its approach has a more military feel to it than Simcox's group, whose members are mainly middle-aged and elderly volunteers dressed in jeans and sitting in camp chairs along migrant trails.
The Rev. Robert Carney is a former St. Louis resident who left town to enter the priesthood at 43. For years, he served in parishes along the Arizona border. Today, he runs a binational, interfaith group to promote understanding about the reasons migrants make the illegal trek.
Some of the armed groups are more worrisome to him than others.
"I don't think we're overly concerned with Chris Simcox. He is not recognized by any of the other vigilante groups. They kind of laugh at him, really. But there are others who are very dangerous people that we've been concerned about from the beginning," he said."

NDIANAPOLIS - A judge sentenced a man to 120 years in prison for killing a cross-dressing teenager and his female friend.
Paul Moore, 21, maintained his innocence Wednesday in Marion County Superior Court as he was sentenced on charges of murder, arson and criminal confinement in the shooting deaths of Brandie Coleman, 18, and Gregory Johnson, 17.
Prosecutors said Moore shot both victims in the front of the head with a .45-caliber handgun when he discovered that Johnson, who dressed as a woman and answered to the name Nireah, was not female. "

"MANSFIELD -- Tuesday night's Allied Special Operations Response Team raid on a Louise Avenue Home netted less than one ounce of cocaine, a small amount of marijuana and several drug paraphernalia items, Sgt. Michael Bammann of the METRICH Drug Task Force said Wednesday.
Officers also seized a loaded Ruger 9-mm pistol and an Intra Tec .22-caliber automatic machine pistol and ammunition.

"Police hope to identify the man who beat a woman with a gun inside a Grandview business Monday night, KMBC's Emily Aylward reported.
The attack happened as the 27-year-old woman, who works as a clerk at the Latino y Ponto grocery and deli, was apparently closing the business for the evening. The clerk, Diana Granados, was alone in the store at the time.
The assailant entered the store and asked the clerk for gum. Surveillance video shows him casually dancing to the music playing inside the business. As he was paying for the gum, he reached into a jacket pocket and pulled out a handgun. Police guessed his plan was to reach into the cash drawer and grab a handful of cash, but the clerk quickly shut the drawer. The attacker then struck her several times with his weapon. "

"LEXINGTON, N.C. -- An 18-year-old man is charged with firing a pistol at a Lexington Senior High School student.
Brittany Craven was arrested shortly after Tuesday afternoon's shooting.
Police and witnesses say Craven went to the school and argued with 18-year-old senior Terence Exodus. During the argument, a .38-caliber handgun was fired three times, hitting a car and the parking lot. Exodus wasn't hurt."

Authorities say Reginald Johnson, 22, of 3007 Weaver St., was found shot in the driveway of 3010 Weaver St. just before 2 a.m. Thursday.

Fire season officially started Monday, but the Shooter Fire burned about five acres on Sunday before it was fully contained at 2:05 p.m.

Dispatchers reported that the man was dead shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The arrests stem from an investigation that began in February 2002 into a Flathead Valley group calling itself "Project 7." Authorities say they uncovered evidence that members of the group had amassed an arsenal of weapons and were plotting to kill local police, prosecutors, judges and other public officials.
