Knives in the news.

The horror!

(I particularly like the emphasis on "Deadly weapons cache" and FRIGHTENING").

Deadly weapons cache seized
By Holly Lloyd-McDonald
May 19, 2004

A FRIGHTENING, multi-bladed knife destined for Melbourne's streets was among a cache of weapons seized by Customs yesterday.

Officers detected the 50cm knife during an X-ray of air cargo from the US at Sydney airport last month.

Bound for Melbourne, the four-pronged attack knife was found with a small arsenal including a sword stick, trench knives, a double-edged dagger and other knives.

The four-bladed knife has a silver-studded cuff wrapping around the wrist while the hand grasps the handle.

I have to switch sides here...

Normally I'm of the opinion that anyone is free to spend their money however they want, on whatever they want. However, in this case I have to question why anyone would waste their $$$ on this piece of crap.

1. "four-pronged attack knife"
I agree! Why buy crap like that when you can buy a genuine 4' long Klingon batleth?

But calling it a "four-pronged attack knife" seems a bit over the top. It's a nearly unusable goofy-assed fantasy weapon.

4. Holy crap I just searched eBay for batleth!
You can get the 4 foot long model in stainless steel for like $40 !!!! And they even have a 24" model suitable for hiding underneath your trench coat!

(I'd get one but I'm afraid that somebody would ask, "What do you need one of those for?" using a really, really high-pitched whine)

2. Gotta be a wall hanger for the D&D crowd
Unless it's some kind of exotic lawn and hedge trimmer of course.

Kind of a do-it-yourself Edward Scissorhands topiary trimmer?

3. I like how they added up the length of the two 25cm blades
to call it a 50cm knife.

10. How about that arsenal???
"Bound for Melbourne, the four-pronged attack knife was found with a small arsenal including a sword stick, trench knives, a double-edged dagger and other knives."

Now my knives are an arsenal also?

5. Hold on a tick here...
I don’t want to make any crass generalizations about all the fine people down under, but talk about uncanny resemblances:

Tristan Williams arrested in slaying of his mother.
SUGAR LAND -- A teenager was arrested Friday in the slaying of his mother, stabbed with two kitchen knives earlier in the day while cleaning a home owned by Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Shaquille O'Neal, police said.

*SNIP*

Tristan Williams, 17, was arrested as he walked down the street near the house in the upscale Sweetwater subdivision.

Williams was being held in the Fort Bend County Jail, said Sugar Land police Capt. Mike Lund. His charge of aggravated assault was expected to be upgraded to murder.

Police said Wllliams' mother, Alice, 37, was attacked in the kitchen during an argument about 12:45 p.m., moments after she and her son entered the house.

She died shortly after arrival at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

9. Teenager faces murder charge (MD)
Edited on Sat May-22-04 08:58 AM by Romulus
http://www.gazette.net/200421/silverspring/news/217435-1.html

A Silver Spring teenager was stabbed to death Saturday night and an off-duty county police officer is being credited with capturing the suspect in the murder.

*snip*

Onorio and the sergeant went in two directions to search the building. And as Onorio was turning a corner, he and Jenkins almost bumped into each other. "We were, I guess, kind of toe-to-toe," he said.

According to Onorio, Jenkins, who had his hands in his pockets, pulled a knife out with his right hand and said, "I'm going to kill you."

Onorio said he doesn't believe Jenkins knew he was a police officer.

*snip*

Nzeza was taken to the Medstar Unit of the Washington Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy showed the cause of death to be a single stab wound to the torso, which police believe was caused by the long fillet-type knife recovered from Jenkins, said Officer Derek Baliles, a police spokesman.

*snip/more*

So many issues:

1) The need to ban the civilian possession of "one-stab-one-kill assault filet knives" made "only for the purpose of killing."
No one needs a knife that sharp except mentally deranged mass murderers. We rely on supermarkets to cut our fish for us, not vigilante wanna-be chefs.

2) The killer was going to stab the next person he came across. Good thing for him that MD has no effective CCW law, thereby allowing him to kill at will without his victims having any chance of doing something about it. But too bad for him that some "obviously paranoid" off-duty LEO was toting a popgun around. "When Onorio first arrived, he was wearing casual clothes, but he carries his gun, badge and handcuffs with him at all times, the officer said in an interview Tuesday."
