Road map is a life saver for us.. (Bush says God told him to invade Iraq)
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 11:52 PM by Peter Frank

Wed., March 22, 2006

Selected minutes acquired by Haaretz from one of last week's cease-fire negotiations between Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas and faction leaders from the Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular and Democratic Fronts, reveal some of the factors at play behind the scenes<snip>

According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush said: "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

7. Only one smoking gun?...

Aside from our Constitutional separation of church & state; there's the Constitutional separation of equal governing powers -- Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

In our democracy, where does a president get off by saying I get to decide this or that?

Re-quoting, "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

:grr:

4. Yeah, Right
Whoever his "god" is, it couldn't be the same one the rest of us are praying to.

10. Hi! Thanks For The Welcome, Too!!!
Hi, Peter! Yes, I would think most people's God would indeed. "Thou shalt not kill" stands out pretty clearly in my mind.

8. Dueling Armageddon’s - Waiting for the rapture in Iran
Two crazed religious fundamentalist leaders who believe in their own version of “democracy” and the Second Coming are pushing their own agendas behind the scenes. Let’s hope that calmer, wiser minds prevail and their twisted dreams don’t come true……

For those who believe, the devotion is real. Tears stream down the cheeks of 2,000 men ripe for the return of the Mahdi, the 12th Imam they expect will soon emerge to bring justice and peace to a corrupt world.

-snip-

As at a Christian revivalist meeting that promises healing and redemption, many weep as they pray for the Shiite Muslim version of the second coming of the Messiah.

-snip-

"Bush said: 'God said to me, attack Afghanistan and attack Iraq.' The mentality of Mr. Bush and (President) Ahmadinejad is the same here - both think God tells them what to do," says Mr. Mohebian, noting that end-of-time beliefs have similar roots in Christian and Muslim theology.

"If you think these are the last days of the world, and Jesus will come , this idea will change all your relations," says Mohebian. "If I think the Mahdi will come in two, three, or four years, why should I be soft? Now is the time to stand strong, to be hard." That mind-set also hearkens back to the missionary ambition of the newly forged Islamic Republic. "What Ahmadinejad believes is that we have to create a model state based on ... Islamic democracy - to be given to the world," says Hamidreza Taraghi, head of the conservative Islamic Coalition Society. "The ... government accepts this role for themselves."

Any possibility of détente with the US may also be in jeopardy, if the US-Iran conflict is cast in Mahdaviat terms. That view holds that the US - with quasireligious declarations of transforming the Middle East with democracy and justice, deploying military forces across the region, and developing a new generation of nuclear weapons - is arrogantly trying to assume the role of Mahdi.

9. To suggest 2 reasons for the move of this from LBN to the I/P forum
1) The article is about 3 years old. The "Wed Mar 22 2006" date is just today's date generated for the web page; the article appears elsewhere on the Web with a date of 2003 eg http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/index.cfm?Page=Article&ID=854 . There is also internal evidence, eg Mahmoud Abbas holds the position, in the article, of Prime Minister, which he did in 2003, and not President of the PNA, which is his current title. He is also talking about recent talks with Sharon.

2) The title you gave it is not the title the article has, which is one of the rules for LBN. The article is about Palestine relations with Israel, so the I/P forum is a very suitable place for it. You could link to the article in GD though.
