Palestinian women trained to revive an ancient art
Palestinian women trained to revive an ancient art
16 Jun 2006 10:43:36 GMT
Fifteen women from the town of Bani Naim in the East Hebron Area Development Programme (ADP) have recently graduated from a stained glass training course offered by World Vision.

Stained glass artist Janet Auman trained the women for nine months. Initially, the women were offered a three-month-long theoretical training mainly in stained glass design. Based on its success, it was decided to offer them an advanced six-month practical training, and the ADP established a special workshop for this purpose.

'I was amazed of how dedicated the women were. Some of them are so good they can become professionals. We recommended that two of them should go for a year-long training course in the city of Ramallah. All the women were good, but they need to keep training to perfect their skills,'' says Janet.

Even after their graduation, the 15 women are continuing to work hard. They want to participate in an art exhibition in Ramallah which is the seat of government and biggest city in the West Bank. They hope that this will be a good chance for them to market their art pieces.

1. Ooooh, NEAT
Stained glass is one of those crafts I've bought because it's a craft I don't DO. I can imagine what they'll do with the wonderful geometric patterns that exist throughout the Arab world. I hope they sell online when they perfect their craft.

2. If the leaders would spend
all the time and $$$ and lives that they waste on waging war - and put it into education, training, nutrition, medical care - imagine what people could accomplish.

Am I living in some sort of lala land to even dream that such things could be possible?

4. The stained glass windows in the 'qat chewing rooms'
in Yemen are fantastic! A couple of years ago a friend threw a party to celebrate the completion of a Nat Geo. photographer's project in Yemen. He had a slide show with Yemeni music in her back garden. We put a sheet on the neighbor's side wall and it was almost psychodelic! The dark interiors of the spaces with the sun shining in thru the abstract glass...
I didn't know that there was a comparable cultural history in Palestine for stained glass.
