Gaza Militants Fire Rockets at Israel

Gaza Militants Fire Rockets at Israel
By STEVE WEIZMAN , 06.23.2006, 12:16 PM

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired three homemade rockets into Israel on Friday after the Israeli prime minister pledged to push forward with airstrikes against the militants despite a series of civilian casualties.

The Israeli army said there were no injuries or damage. But the attack prompted one Israeli lawmaker to call for the army to launch a military offensive into the densely populated Gaza Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert apologized twice Thursday for civilian deaths in recent airstrikes in Gaza. But he added, "Israel will continue to carry out targeted attacks against terrorists and those who try to harm Israeli citizens."

One apology came after an informal meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan, the first meeting between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in more than a year.

6. hellfires shot into civilian crowds ok with you, IDF man?
Let's see, how many Palestinian civilians has Israel killed with missile fire? And how many Israelis killed by Kassams? What's the per shot kill ratio? "Kassams are ok then?" What a bullshit question.

I'll worry about crude, ineffective kassams when Israel stops murdering Palestinian civilians with laser guided hellfire missiles fired from Apache helicopters.

Is that clear enough for you?

Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 02:24 AM by pelsar
minor detail....that already happened on the day israel left gaza!!!!

..and 30 kassams started falling on that very same night........and havent stopped since

so remind me again...why are the palestenains in gaza trying to kill and terrorize israeli civilians?

and why were on it ......assuming israel does stop shooting ...and the kassams still fly (which we all know will continue)....then what?......what would be your suggestion to the israelis on the 67 border?

15. I agree that Israel should stop
firing missiles at Gaza and the West Bank, but I can't help but think that those who fire Qassams from Gaza must be some of the most cynical bastards on the face of the planet. They clearly know that there is going to be retalitory action from the Israelis and that civilians, including children will be killed, and they obviously don't care. They're so intent on furthering their goals that they have no problem seeing their countrymen, women and children, die.

There is a reason for that rule. Do know what it is? My guess is that for every photo of horror, the "other" side can do the same. Should I resort to posting pics of those murdered by Palestinian terrorists? Would that make their lives more worthy?

26. since the responses with grapics were deleted, what you said was...
...that Palestinians should refrain from firing against Israel because it brings on the collective reprisals against Palestinian civilians. That's a shameful philosophy, IMO.

28. No. I didn't say that, but feel free to twist my words.
Those who are firing on Israel from Gaza know damn well what they're doing. They want to provoke Israel. Personally, I think it's both callous and stupid of the Israelis to retaliate, but that hardly negates the stupidity or the callousness of the Palestinians firing rockets into Israel. I'm condeming both sides, though I believe the Israelis have the greater burden. Although they no longer occupy Gaza, they are still occupying the West Bank. Of course, it serves well to remember that if Arab armies hadn't amassed on Israel's borders, there would have been no '67 war and most likely no occupation.

Just out of curiosity, you've expressed your support for the firing of rockets from Palestine, do you support other acts of what you term resistance?

29. just a side bar...
"Of course, it serves well to remember that if Arab armies hadn't amassed on Israel's borders, there would have been no '67 war and most likely no occupation."

That statement is partly true. The first part is correct, the second part, about no occupation, is not correct. Prior to Israel's "victory," Gaza was occupied by Egypt and had been since, I believe '54 (possibly early) and the West Bank had actually been annexed, not occupied, by Jordan. So, the occupation would have likely continued, there just wouldn't have been the 'wonderful' fall guy that Israel makes.

30. there would have been nothing to annex had Gaza not been...
...a land of refugees, either. The Egyptian and Jordanian occupations were of refugee camps and and land thrown into turmoil by zionist expansionism and the Nakba a few years earlier. Again, if we're going to invoke history let's keep it in context.

31. Not quite true
The Nakba was of Arab and British making, not Zionism. They thought they could easily kill off the pesky Jews and told their brethren to leave to get out of the crossfire....ooops. They were wrong! As for the land being in turmoil, well, too bad! That was ALSO their own doing. So why is it that both Gaza and the West Bank were under ARAB control and yet NO Palestinian homeland was created? Oh that's right...because the Arabs wanted all of Israel as the Palestinian homeland! Therefore, they allowed their Arab brother and sisters to languish because of their own expansionist plans!

Invoke history, don't re-write it!

17. clear to me...
...dead or injured Israelis are not worth worrying about to you, at this point in time. Sounds almost like what Olmert said (and is being roasted for in this very forum), with the small exception that he is Israeli talking about Israelis, and, to my knowledge, you aren't even Palestinian; yet, they seen to be of more importance.

22. Gazans
The Gazans are being oppressed by the Gazans. Those who set up missile launchers in populated neighborhoods. The roving gangs. The absolute lawlessness.
Believe it or not, there are some Gazans that actually want peace, they want to get on with their lives. (just like the israelis do)

You ignore that, and speak as though their actions are independent of their oppression by Israel. EVERYTHING that happens in Gaza happens within that context. You cannot erase the crimes of Israel against the Palestinians by ignoring them. Well, maybe in your own head you can, but the rest of the world is paying attention.

Not independent of oppression by Egyptians, Brits, Ottomons, Romans, Greeks etc...that's they neighborhood they live in. Currently however the Gazans are being oppressed by Gazans that's the present context, and it should not be ignored.

was occupation by israel. the other 20 was by jordan and egypt.

why didnt jordan and egypt allow the the palestinians to create their homeland? (remember there has been no independent country of palestine ever)

why are the terrorists in gaza still launching rockets on a daily basis towards civilians even though israel has pulled out completelyt from gaza. is israel just supposed to ignore the rocket attacks?

Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT)

>snip

In August and September 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew approximately eight thousand settlers, along with military personnel and installations, from the Gaza Strip and four small settlements in the northern West Bank near Jenin. While Israel has since declared the Gaza Strip a “foreign territory” and the crossings between Gaza and Israel “international borders,” under international humanitarian law (IHL), Gaza remains occupied, and Israel retains its responsibilities for the welfare of Gaza residents. Israel maintains effective control over Gaza by regulating movement in and out of the Strip as well as the airspace, sea space, public utilities and population registry. In addition, Israel declared the right to re-enter Gaza militarily at any time in its “Disengagement Plan” Since the withdrawal, Israel has carried out aerial bombardments, including targeted killings, and has fired artillery into the northeastern corner of Gaza.

3. Opposite and Unequal reaction
"any Israelis get shredded at the beach...?"

No doubt some more "palestinians" will get shredded as a result of their missile attacks.
Is that a good thing? Do you support the missile attacks? Why? Will it lead to peace?

Maybe it's time to rethink that particular tactic. Especially when firing missiles from areas with lots of women and children around.

Yes, that's the UNRWA definition of "paelstinian" refugees and only those somehow unique refugees.
It's seems as though they will have "refugee" status ad infinitum.--
