Air strikes in Gaza, Israeli planes invading Syrian air space
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 04:44 PM by Techno Dog
Israeli planes are dropping leaflets warning residents of Gaza to flee if they don't want to be killed.

Syria fires on Israeli jets

Associated Press
Wednesday June 28, 2006

Air defences fired on Israeli warplanes that entered Syrian airspace early today and forced them to flee, according to state-run Syrian TV, as tensions escalated over the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian militants.

Israel said its planes buzzed the summer residence of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the Mediterranean coastal city of Latakia, flying low enough to cause a noise on the ground.

Israeli officials said on condition of anonymity that Assad was targeted because of the "direct link" between Syria and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group holding Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, 19, in the Gaza Strip. Syria hosts Khaled Meshaal, Hamas' exiled supreme leader.

And in order to let him go, the Palestinians want the Israelis to release the women and children that they captured.

"Israel also attempted to apply pressure through various other channels yesterday, including asking American and Egyptian officials to press the Palestinian Authority for Shalit's return, and by warning the PA that Israel would start targeting senior Hamas leaders, including members of the Hamas-led PA government, if Shalit is not returned unharmed. Hamas was one of three organizations that participated in the assault on the outpost, which is located on the Israeli side of the Gaza-Israel border.

The assault also killed two soldiers - First Lieutenant Hanan Barak, 20, of Arad and Staff Sergeant Pavel Slutzker, 20, of Dimona - and wounded another seven, of whom three were released after being treated by the hospital. Of the other four, two were lightly injured, one was moderately injured, and the fourth was initially classified as seriously injured, but has since improved and is now in moderate condition."

Instead of editing my post I'll leave it there as penance for my error.

I was under the impression (wrongly) he was captured during one of the several raids that have taken place in the past week.

"You were correct and I was wrong, but because of all the other bad stuff Israel has done, I got mixed up." That is basically what your "retraction" is.

No sorry. There was a CLEAR retraction then an attempt to explain my error.

"all of the other bad stuff" lead to the confusion but was in no way meant to excuse the error. Hence the retraction instead of any belligerent attempts to deny responsibility.

45. same place the residents of Falujah in Iraq were supposed to flee
or the American Indians -- Wounded Knee -- or starving reservation Indians who left the reservation to hunt for food and were murdered by white settlers & scalps turned in for a bounty.

The side that has the most lethal toys makes the rules -- and writes the history books.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I fear that this is going to be a long bloody summer in many places.

The Israeli army has dropped leaflets in northern Gaza, urging residents to avoid areas which might be targeted.

66. The phrasing isn't exact
it's rather irritating - I found three articles quoting the leaflets yesterday, and now I can't find any of them:mad:. Basically, what they said was that people in areas the IDF was operating in should stay indoors and stay "out of the action".
