Israel jump-starts electric car market
(an article from Financial Times)
A venture capital-backed plan to be announced on Monday will aim to jump-start the stalled electric vehicles market and make Israel a national laboratory for the world’s first mass roll-out of rechargeable cars. Renault/ Nissan <snip>

If true, and electric cars spread worldwide,
IMO, the electric car would have a profound
effect on the Middle East.

2. They're coming. Google 'Tesla' + 'car'
Johnson Controls is one company working on batteries. They just sold some to China.

4. O.T., but, I think Tesla is vaporware, unlike in the article, ...
where a real company, Renault, is involved.

9. The car's real enough. Leave it to a Brit news source to provide the 4-1-1:

The car's real enough. Or at least the videos on youtube, and on the company's website, show actual vehicles driving on real roads.

But the remaining, final obstacles to the car's getting into production, apparently, are centered on 2 remaining issues, or 'snags':

* "crash testing"

and

* "durability testing"

Call that for what it is, the Federal Government's, , and the Bushie's, last chance to keep consumers from having a potential alternative to Cheney's Petroleum monopoly.

If this car had been designed to run on liquefied coal, for instance, I'd wager quite a lot, that it wouldn't be facing any such bureaucratic hurdles or roadblocks, to be approved for final sale.

The coal and mining industries are probably first in line, when it comes to the Republican's 'alternative energy' preference list, Schwarzenegger & those Rooskie's at Google be damned.

That's the trouble with 'croney capitalism', of course, but then it's not like we're living in a democracy, or anything.

By the way, what does O.T. mean?

10. the video proves nothing
any college engineering school
could build a 'electric conversion car' that
could go 100 miles on batteries.

without tearing the car apart,
outsiders have no idea how legit
Tesla is.
............................
the US is not the whole would,
US laws only apply in the US.
Countries with high gasoline prices,
would seem to be a more likely starting point for electric
car efforts. but for some reason, not.
........................
O.T. --> off topic

3. Supressing
Palestinian driving rights. Sorry not to make light of a situation I disapprove (These tactics have so far failed to force Hamas to concede anything and I think will only hurt everyone in the long run)but that's the first thing that came to mind.

5. the POSSIBLE effect would be across the Arab world.
How would the external support for Palestinians change, if,
hypothetically,
demand for crude oil would drop by half.

just guessing here, but the Saudis bankroll half the Arab world,
and, Iran pays for its version of a modern economy with oil.
what happens if all that changes.

7. I doubt it would change much
Since the Palestinians supported Saddam in Gulf War I the Saudis haven't given them a dime. Most of their cash comes from Western nations anyway. The Arab/Muslim world pays them a lot of lip service but isn't interested in actually solving their problems. Look at how Palestinians are treated in the Arab world... they are useful pawns for the Arabs. America and the EU pay the bills.

6. What are you talking about?
The fact that some roads are Israeli only or Palestinian only in the west bank? That's not intended to force concessions from Hamas, for Chrissake! It's so Israeli drivers aren't put in danger from Palestinian shooters, a problem that plagued Israeli drivers prior to the separation.
