Analysis / U.S. loses interest in the road map

The deadly attack on the American convoy in the Gaza Strip yesterday will not affect United States policy on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, say sources in the Prime Minister's Bureau and the Foreign Ministry.

Washington will pursue its public commitment to the road map, together with no involvement on the ground, and will continue making sure Israel does not go too far in its reactions and moves.

Since the fall of Mahmoud Abbas's cabinet, President George Bush has lost interest in the political process and motivation. The White House is busy trying to salvage the situation in Iraq with the presidential elections approaching. Senior American officials have stopped visiting the region. Envoy John Wolf, whose posting in Jerusalem clearly signaled the promoting of the road map, has not returned from home leave.

Comment: Aluf Benn seems to be the only Ha'aretz author with his eyes open about this shift in US policy. He puts it in diplomatic language (the likes of Caspit and Fox are more blunt), but the facts are obvious enough regardless.
