Report: Lebanon charges six in widening Israel spy probe
Six Lebanese were charged with spying for Israel on Wednesday, Reuters quoted judicial sources as saying, bringing to 12 the number of Lebanese formally accused in recent weeks of espionage for Israel.

Lebanese authorities are reportedly holding up to 25 suspects in what security sources say is a widening investigation into espionage for Israel. Those charged on Wednesday included a senior police officer, along with his wife and sister, according to Reuters.

A retired general in the powerful General Security directorate, his wife and nephew were reportedly charged last month with spying for Israel, which fought a 34-day war in 2006 with the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla group.

The six accused on Wednesday face charges including supplying Israel with information to help its armed forces and visiting the neighbouring state without permission, Reuters said.

1. High-ranking Israeli intelligence officer commits suicide
Bethlehem – Ma’an – A high-ranking Israeli intelligence committed suicide on Sunday, Israel’s Channel 2 television reported.

The officer, who holds the rank of major, shot himself in the head in his office on Sunday morning, according to the televised report. The officer’s identity was withheld due to the “sensitive” nature of his work.

The Israeli intelligence apparatus has come under harsh criticism in recent days due to an ongoing scandal involving the exposure of an Israeli spy network in Lebanon.
