Construction goes ahead at new Israeli settlement

Associated Press
2009-05-18 07:20 PM Fonts Size:

Ahead of a White House visit by Israel's new prime minister, officials are moving ahead with new construction at a nascent Jewish settlement deep in the West Bank.
The announcement could cause friction at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's meeting Monday with President Barack Obama. The U.S. has been urging Israel to halt settlement construction as a way to revive stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

The new construction is set to take place at Maskiot, a former army camp where 10 families now live in trailers.

Local government head David Elhaiini says officials have begun taking bids from contractors to build infrastructure for permanent homes. He said Monday that Defense Minister Ehud Barak approved the construction in July 2008.

1. Looks like the Israeli government is carrying out the will of the electorate.
The last Israeli elections made it very clear indeed that this is what the majority of the people of Israel want.

The only chance for a peace settlement in the forseeable future is if it is imposed forcibly by the US against Israel's will - Israel is simply not a partner for peace at present.

4. Looks like it was Labour Leader Ehud Barak who approved of building settlement
Can't pin the blame entirely on Bibi.

6. Barak does have a lot to answer for.

It was also partly his responsibility that the Third Intifada(the event that gave Hamas its big break in show business)happened. If Barak has made a REAL peace proposal at Camp David(which would have meant CONTIGUOUS block of land in the West Bank, a corridor between the West Bank, real compensation for those denied the Right of Return and East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital)there would have BEEN no Third Intifada.

Ehud Barak never wanted peace. He just wanted to be able to claim victory in the war.

BTW, thanks for starting this thread, Cali. You and I don't always disagree but I respect you for getting this one going.

3. Israel: FRAK you America!
Shut up and keep on sending us money and weapons.

If this were a marriage, I would say it is time to call a divorce lawyer.

5. Israel will have to make some hard choices if they keep

up on this path. Do they want to risk alienating the majority of Americans by digging in their heels and settlements a little deeper?

7. Kadima politicians attacked the outcome of the Netanyahu-Obama meeting.
Kadima politicians attacked the outcome of the Netanyahu-Obama meeting.

"It's a shame that Israel's biggest expert in understanding American political culture failed when he tried to tempt President Obama with meaningless words, and missed the opportunity to create relations based on trust, just as he is about to miss out on the historic opportunity the president mentioned," said MK Ze'ev Boim.
