Report: 6 detained for organ trafficking in Israel

Israeli police on Tuesday arrested six men suspected of being involved in an organ trafficking ring, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported Wednesday.

Among the suspects are an Israeli army reserves brigadier-general and two lawyers, according to the report.

Police also said that during the investigation they uncovered a large, very well-organized industry of organ trafficking, the newspaper reported. The ring reportedly includes organ traffickers, agents, and lawyers.

Six Israelis were detained on suspicion of running an international organ trafficking ring and breaking promises to donors to pay for their removed kidneys, police said Wednesday.

Police also said they prevented several would-be donors from giving up their kidneys, intercepting some at Israel's airport as they were preparing to travel abroad for surgery.

The traffickers offered up to $100,000 per kidney but in at least two cases didn't pay the donors after the organs were surgically removed, police said.

The number of actual transplants was not known, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. He added that "dozens" of potential donors answered newspaper ads placed by the ring.

The donors were flown to Europe, South America or Southeast Asia, where the organs were extracted. They often returned home empty-handed and with medical complications, police said. Israeli law bans organ sales.

Organ trafficking, on the other hand, is a serious international problem across numerous countries, including Israel.

They're just glad they can bring up blood-libel without saying blood libel.

unless your contending the organs were "beamed" from "donor" to recipient and BTW the word "harvest" is commonly used in medicine whether the donor is living or dead such as in bone marrow transplant where the donors are living

The story about Israelis killing Palestinians and harvesting their organs is an anti-semitic myth is what I meant. The story from the Swedish paper in 2009.

Police on Tuesday arrested six men suspected of being involved in an organ trafficking ring in northern Israel. Among the suspects are an IDF reserves brigadier-general and two lawyers.

The department for fraud and misappropriation in northern Israel has been conducting an undercover investigation which began following a complaint by a 50-year-old woman from Nazareth, who replied to an advertisement in Arabic offering 100,000 dollars for a kidney.

The woman underwent medical examinations to ensure a match, and she was then flown a country in Eastern Europe where they extracted her kidney. The woman said that when she returned to Israel, she did not receive the money promised to her. Police say they have since received similar complaints.
