Palestinian university twinning
http://www.cherwell.org/content/10453

This week, plans got underway that would see Oxford University twinned with the Palestinian University Al-Quds in East Jerusalem.

Following a conference hosted earlier in the month by Oxford Society for Medicine (OSM), called "Healthcare under Siege", plans were made to twin Oxford with Al-Quds University.

The twinning project would give Oxford students the possibility of studying electives in Al-Quds Univeristy, allow for a greater share of resources between the medical schools, and establish of a long term relationship between the two universities.

Proponents of this twinning initiative also hope to set up a scholarship to fund postgraduate studies of Gazan students.

(This is from a student newspaper, not a national paper; but I thought it was worth quoting as an interesting and positive item.)

1. Really good news.
Hopefully, all these med students will become doctors and not terrorists.

2. Because, of course, terrorism is what everyone associates with Palestinians, right?
N.T.

Talk about unhelpful stereotypes.

4. None of them were GOING to be terrorists.
Enough hatred already. Palestinians are just human beings like anyone else. None of us can say, with absolute certainty, what we would or wouldn't have done had we been treated as people in the West Bank and Gaza have been treated since 1967. And no outsiders are really entitled to judge.

5. I disagree that 'no outsiders are entitled to judge'.
Edited on Sun May-30-10 11:58 AM by LeftishBrit
Outsiders judge other countries and groups all the time. 'No one outside is entitled to judge' is often a lazy excuse for 'We should have the right to use whatever tactics we wish'. This excuse is used all the time by the Israeli Right, if it comes to that.

Not that this should be relevant to a thread about university/professional links, anyway. I was also shocked that the issue was raised in this context. But anyone has the right to judge any group's/ country's actions - whether Israel, Palestine, America, Britain, China, or wherever.

7. OK, I probably DID go a little too far with that response.
It was just that the collective diss of Palestinian morality in the post I was responding to got under my skin. It sounded like somebody in your country's old Colonial Office drinking tea with pinky finger extending and tut-tutting about "those Zulu savages". Not very pukka(or would it be way TOO pukka?)

8. I think this is a very good strategy. It cuts the governments out
of the communication loop between the people.
