Hamas says it may stop attacks from Gaza if srael quits Strip
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 11:05 PM by bemildred
Hamas may stop attacks from Gaza "for a
certain time" if Israel withdraws from the
Strip, but would resume and intensify them if
Israel continued to hold onto the West Bank,
the movement's founder and spiritual leader,
Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, said Tuesday.

Yassin stressed in an interview with Reuters
that attacks in the West Bank itself would go
on as long as it remained under Israel's control.

...

Yassin also refuted reports that Hamas intends
to assume control of Gaza once the Israelis
leave, saying that "we have never had the
intention of taking over security
responsibilities in the Strip" but "we seek
cooperation and partnership among all the
Palestinian national and Islamic movements."

...

"Hamas actions are what made Ariel Sharon
decide on a retreat from Gaza. In the past he
promised security and said Netzarim was like
Tel Aviv and now he is ready to leave Gaza
unconditionally. God willing, we will see
victory and the liberation of our lands with our
own eyes," Deif said. He said Hamas was
developing new weapons, including rockets,
and that he has turned down "hundreds of
requests" from people who want to be suicide
bombers, including entire families, "to avoid
spilling the blood of the shaheeds in
vain."

Haaretz

Edit: fixing a quote.

1. They had what, 1 successful attack from Gaza? Ever?
And those were a couple of Brits, right?

They sure have a way of making concessions that mean nothing sound like s... wait... nevermind.

I just remembered who does that too, in that same general area, but it would be a mistake to say it.

2. Humility doesn't seem to be one of his strong points.
Not that it is generally manifest anywhere else.

9. Hopefully they'll kill Yassin and Arafat on the same day
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 11:36 PM by _Jumper_
That would give new meaning to the phrase "shock and awe."

7. If he is killed, he becomes a martyr.
So he should be arrested like any other ordinary criminal.

6. So why isn't he dead?
If they can find him to do an interview, they should
be able to find him with a Hellfire missile. As has
been pointed out before he cannot be to quick on his
feet.

12. I find it interesting
how all these Hamas leaders often manage to 'narrowly escape' Israeli missile attacks

13. I find it interesting that nobody can answer the question.
Unless you accept the "martyr" explanation, which I find
a bit bogus because there doesn't seem to be any objection
to making a few martyrs in other situations.

15. The evil you know
Is sometimes better than the evil you don't. Perhaps they have a mole inside his group of insiders. Perhaps he is bugged. Who knows. But if he is dead, then his successor could be anyone.

14. 'For a certian time'
What kind of grotesque joke is that?

Is anybody in the ME serious about peace? Yassin certainly isn't.
