Condoleezza Rice fundraises for the PA
According to a May 3 article in The Washington Post, the Bush administration has launched a "diplomatic offensive" aimed at allaying Arab concerns regarding the president's recent embrace of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza withdrawal plan. Among other things, the paper notes, "the administration in recent days has tried to emphasize its concern for the Palestinians."

This has included an effort to drum up financial support for the PA.

"As part of the diplomatic offensive," the report says, "national security adviser Condoleezza Rice last week called some Arab countries that were behind in making payments to shore up the Palestinian Authority."

Isn't that thoughtful of her. With American casualties mounting daily in Iraq, Osama Bin-Laden still on the run, and North Korea threatening to develop more nuclear weapons, doesn't Rice have better things to do than making sure Arafat can balance his checkbook?

Indeed, Rice's telethon on behalf of the PA is particularly astonishing in light of some of the Palestinians' recent actions.

Just this past weekend the PA transferred funds to Hamas-affiliated organizations in Gaza, claiming that economic conditions in the territories were the reason for the move. But if the PA itself is truly in such need of funds that the US national security adviser must intervene, why is it showering money on Hamas terrorists?

4. I had to look into this one
Edited on Tue May-04-04 09:17 PM by Jack Rabbit
This is from the Washington Post, dated Monday May 3:

The administration in recent days has tried to emphasize its concern for the Palestinians, such as floating an economic stabilization plan for Gaza after the Israeli withdrawal, in part relying on financial support of the World Bank, officials said. As part of the diplomatic offensive, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice last week called some Arab countries that were behind in making payments to shore up the Palestinian Authority.

I quote from the above story because I thought the idea of Dr. Rice "fundraising for the PA" sounded a bit sensational and, being that our source the Jerusalem Post, I thought it might be wise to look into the matter rather than accept what is said here at face value.

Of course, it is a bit sensational to call this "fundraising" for the PA. Perhaps Mr. Freund, a confidant of Mr. Netanyahu, would prefer no money be delivered for aid in the Palestinian Territories; if he thinks the situation is unstable now, and it is, he might like to see what it would look like with services cut off to the Palestinian people. If there is an alternative to funneling funds through the PA, Mr. Fruend did not name it. I, too, would like to see such an alternative, since some of funds going through the PA have a way of landing in a crook's bank account rather than feeding children in a refugee camp.

So, Mr. Fruend, offing no alternative to what is admittedly a bad situation of which he cares little, takes this ball and spins it to make it sound like Mr. Bush's National Security Adviser is actively supporting Palestinian terrorism. Condi may be inept and Bush may be a dishonest idiot, but such a charge is clearly absurd.

Until I read this piece, I regarded the JPost as the FoxNews of the Israeli press. This piece slips closer to the level of NewsMax or the WorldNetDaily. Next, they may be competing with Drudge.

The only solace to take in this kind of shoddy journalism is that it appears that the Israeli right wing appears to see the handwriting on the wall and is throwing the Bushies to the wolves.
