Israel accuses EU of favouring Arabs in Mideast conflict

DUBLIN: Israel accused the European Union on Thursday of siding with Arabs in the Mideast conflict in harsh exchanges at a meeting intended to promote peace, EU and Israeli officials said. EU officials said the charge by Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom reflected his own opposition to an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza strip - an issue Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon is considering.

Shalom said he told the EU their "bias toward the Palestinians makes your participation in the diplomatic process problematic." They should push the Palestinians to "dismantle the infrastructure of terrorist organisations, confiscate illegal weapons and put an end to incitement and violence," he told Associated Press Television News.

At a two-day meeting of EU foreign ministers and their counterparts from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Arab neighbours, the Europeans reiterated the goals of the "road map" to peace that provides for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Cowen, the Irish foreign minister whose country holds the EU presidency, wanted the event to trigger fresh enthusiasm for the plan, newly endorsed this week by its authors, the United States, the United Nations, Russia and the EU......
