"The decision to establish settlements inside the Gaza Strip was an historical mistake. They are not on the map of interests of the State of Israel”, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told Likud members on Sunday. The meeting was held in Eilat, one of the few cities where the disengagement plan won a majority in the Likud referendum.
“The Gaza Strip is not the land of our founding fathers. Whether there will be peace or not, the settlers will not be there in five years”, Mofaz added.
According to the defense minister, “Those behind the ‘Gaza and Jericho First’ agreement were mistaken to allow Israeli communities to remain in the Gaza Strip”. Mofaz added, “We must strive for a reality in which the State of Israel has defensible borders and that any peace agreement will be based on the end of the conflict”.
