Israeli Troops Demolish Palestinian Homes
Israeli Troops Demolish Palestinian Homes

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli troops demolished 13 Palestinian homes along a Gaza road Monday, after Palestinian gunmen ambushed Jewish settlers there during an outdoor memorial service at the spot where an Israeli family was killed last week.

No Israelis were injured in Sunday's attack, but automatic fire kept dozens of settlers, including terrified toddlers, pinned to the ground for 20 minutes. Many crouched behind cars during the battle, before racing to nearby armored buses.

One Israeli man shielded his screaming 4-year-old daughter on the ground. An armored personnel carrier drove along the side of the road, kicking up large clouds of dust that engulfed the settlers and made it harder for gunmen to take aim.

Israeli soldiers killed at least one gunman, and were searching the area for the body of the second gunman. The militant Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the shooting.

No Israeli's were inured, let alone killed.

The IDF killed 'at least' one gunman, and were searching for the body of the second (probably dead).

AND THEY STILL DEMOLISH 13 CIVILIAN HOUSES!

Not overkill at all.

2. Perhaps they anticipate
living another few days, at least. This is similar to the discussion on this thread.

There is something working up here, and the next few days are bound to get worse. Best to take out the terrorist's shelters now.

I'm not so sure it's as easy in the US. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

5. Previous requests
Edited on Tue May-11-04 12:05 AM by Gimel
There had been previous requests to remove these buildings because of terrorist activity, but the Israeli supreme Court turned down the army's petition to do so. After the murders of 5 civilians and the 20 min shooting attack just 36 hours ago, originating from them, it was decided to demolish these structures.

7. You didn't answer the question...
Which was, how did they know they were sheltering terrorists? Who made these previous requests and how did they know those homes were sheltering terrorists, and did those who made the requests have an ounce of credibility on the matter? Obviously the Supreme Court didn't believe them. Also, I'd be fascinated to see a link to any proof of the Israeli Supreme Court overturning its decision in the space of just a few days. That'd be one hell of a fast moving court if that's actually happened...

I was sure that it was obvious that when you see shooting originating from buildings that that is where the shooters are stationed. You may quibble about this as much as you like, but facts on the ground remain facts on the ground.

On edit: Since I didn't make such a claim, I don't see why I need to provide a link.

6. UN Says Homes Of 1,100 Palestinians Demolished In Last 10 Days
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=9c6acd05fb371ad4

<snip>

"The last 10 days have seen one of the most intense periods of destruction by the Israeli military in Gaza since the start of the Intifada, with more than 100 homes flattened and 1,100 people left homeless, the main United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees said Monday.

According to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the Israeli military has demolished or damaged beyond repair 131 residential buildings since the start of May, bringing to 17,594 the total number of people who have lost their homes in Gaza.

The majority of the demolitions have taken place in Rafah in the south, where 11,215 people have already been made homeless by demolitions since the beginning of the current strife in September 2000, and in the region of the Kissufim Road, where a Palestinian attack on 2 May left an Israeli mother and her four children dead."
