(Updates with Palestinian denial paragraphs 4-5)
WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) - Some Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have dismantled their own houses to make it look like Israel damaged them during an army raid, Israel's ambassador to the United States said on Tuesday.
Ambassador Daniel Ayalon said Palestinians have removed roofs from 30 homes in Rafah refugee camp since Monday during a deadly operation Israel says is intended to destroy tunnels used to smuggle weaponry into occupied Gaza from Egypt.
Ayalon's charge came as Israel is facing international condemnation for threatening to demolish Palestinian homes in the cinderblock camp of 90,000 people.
A representative of the Palestinian Authority in Washington, Hassan Rahman, denied the accusation and said it was "ludicrous" to think residents had time to dismantle roofs as they fled the raid.
