8-year-old Palestinian girl killed by gunfire, 7 wounded

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip, Aug. 30 — Israel killed two Hamas militants, including a leading field commander, in a helicopter missile strike Saturday, the latest in a series of attacks that have sent Palestinian militants into hiding. Israeli troops, meanwhile, killed an 8-year-old girl and wounded seven other Palestinians with submachine gun fire in the Gaza Strip’s Khan Younis refugee camp, witnesses and hospital officials said.
THEY SAID the girl, Aya Fayad, was shot in the chest by soldiers firing at the camp from a nearby military base. The army couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Also Saturday, an official loyal to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat refused to step down from his post after the Cabinet, run by Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, voted to replace him. It was seen as the latest in a power struggle between Abbas, who has the backing of the United States, and Arafat.
Arafat has repeatedly tried to undermine Abbas and the prime minister’s authority has faded rapidly with the escalating violence. Saturday’s missile strike seemed likely to further hurt his efforts to implement the U.S.-backed “road map” peace plan toward Palestinian statehood.
Earlier, four missiles were fired at a vehicle carrying the two Palestinian men, witnesses said. It was the Israeli fifth missile strike in 10 days.
