Is this forum monitored by spooks?
Was the 911 topic taken off the GD forum because the administrators knew it was going to attract the government's attention? Anybody....anybody?

1. Yes.
They can see your IP. Remain calm while federal agents intercept you and tag you with a tracking implant.

You can try to run, but that's what they want.

6. 911 is a 'board-eater'
The discussion on the topic is so complex and prolonged that it does take preference over other topics. The 'conspiracy'-tag to it also drags the reputation of DU down, and opens for rw smear jobs. In a scenario where 'get Democrats elected' is the primary goal I can see some merit to that. Hopefully there will be some lenience among the mods about threads in GD and also on the Greatest (there was previously, even after the 'dungeon' had become a term for this forum). Now that they are elected it's important, as this topic is of much concern to many people. One can't see the topic as closed and settled, no matter wich camp people are in.

7. It is understandable that the admins hold an element of embarrassment about how this topic
Edited on Thu Dec-14-06 05:59 PM by Anarcho-Socialist
is discussed by some excitable individuals. It is here for that reason. It is here so people can discuss the issue, but it is without the high-profile that GD allows thus lessening the potential embarrassment for the admins.

Personally I see very little debate of value here. The laws of scientific method and empiricist philosophy do not seem to apply here (due to its lack of acceptance by some) and so traditional debate is difficult. However the potential entertainment value of this forum remains buoyant.

10. Gee, I wouldn't want Bush supporters to call us "silly".
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 08:19 AM by screembloodymurder
We're not being silly, we're simply an uncensored, democratic forum where speculation and open minds are allowed to voice concerns. Speculation may turn out to be silly, or it may just give rise to the truth. If we keep our mouths shut for fear of looking stupid, we'll never learn the truth. Why hold a discussion forum to higher standards than the MSM holds this government. MSM has allowed this administration to change the justification for a war of aggression that has killed tens of thousands, and we're afraid of looking silly? Well, excuuuuuuse me.

13. I'll tell you what's pathetic straw man.
Labeling a persons serious concerns as silly. If the DU is going to censor its members because it fears "looking silly", then this is not a forum. A forum is a public meeting place for open discussion; a place where anyone can express their ideas w/o fear of being locked in the dungeon. Now, I can buy the fact that 911 is a topic that demands its own forum, but when you start labeling and locking posts then that's ridicule and censorship. And that's pathetic.

This isn't about freepers, though lord knows they can and will use any possible words we've said against us at the slightest whim.

But no. That's not our concern (those who agree with me, anyway). Many of us feel that this is the best progressive site on all of the web; and with good reason. It is a big tent community and lord knows there is no shortage of topics and viewpoints to discuss here. But there are certain topics or viewpoints which or so blatantly fanatical or filled with lunacy that it brings down the legitimacy of this entire site.

Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 10:23 AM by screembloodymurder
Your "lunacy" is my censorship. When you outlaw speculation, you put a damper on my ability to reason. In an open forum, any argument can be made, weighed and accepted or rejected on its own merits. One of the great strengths of the DU is the way it functions like a collective investigative reporter. A speculation leads to a connection that turns into a proof. If we can't speculate, we lose that spark.

A fanatic won't listen to reason. That doesn't mean we shouldn't listen to a fanatic.

18. DU isn't an open forum
The rules make it clear who can and who can't post here. The basic criteria include supporting Democratic candidates in elections and the poster holding liberal and progressive views. Speculating on fanciful conspiracy theories can often be detrimental to one of the main goals on the site (the election of the Democratic Party wherever their candidates stand).

"In an open forum, any argument can be made, weighed and accepted or rejected on its own merits."

I can understand that point, but more than occasionally on messageboards like these the merits of a particular argument are defined differently than say they would in an academic context. Detailed, analytical and reasoned argument requires time to put together and may be lost in the general morass when the loudest, most thoughtless individual can thrive (as represented in ill-considered posts).

Speculating that Bush is behind every single incidental negative thing in the world can lead to this website being embarrassed and labelled as a crazy website. I prefer to blame Bush for things we have evidence for (lying to Congress, getting the US into an illegal war, campaign corruption etc).

how small the window of oppurtunity is to create a good impression on the target audience.
If you have one shitty article that gets picked up by biased competition and spun beyond recognition, it's hard to recover from. If it weren't for the excellent job the Admins and mods have done in the past 5 years, you wouldn't even care about being able to use this forum to voice your opinion.

Have you posted in killtown's forum, or the loosechange forum, or freerepublic lately? I doubt it.
I'm guessing it's because you don't want to be associated with people who lack sense.

33. 9/11 is it's own topic
For a very long time after 9/11, many here at DU had an ongoing interest in the information that came out in the media.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it is why Paul Thompson started the timeline. A way to keep the information in one place for reference.
It was a standard pratice to provide the link for the information posted in a dicussion thread. Before DU became the size it is now, it was easy to find the 9/11 forum. I will tell you from my experience with this thread, it had been informative until the 9/11 Commission Report came out.

Somehow, the attitude changed here. I don't understand why some have to live on this thread as if they own it, fighting each person who comes here as if any of these events are crystal clear. Please stop saying every structural engineer, as if every engineer evaluated all the steel after the collapse.
It is a fact that they didn't test all the steel, and a fact, they didn't perform all of the available tests. The NIST did enough investigation, to reach a conclusion, that would be accepted as how they felt the towers collapsed. I accept that. I don't accept their conculsions. Here at DU, that is my opinion and my right.

Here is what is especially demeaning.....the constant CONSPIRACY THEORY accusations peppered with any event that has ever had the label of CT put on it, together any event from this horrible experience.

It shows a real lack of class. Most of the DU posters are smart enough to recognise the snarky behavior as immaturity. People who have lives, don't hang around on message boards just to argue their point ever single day. Really, go back and look at the constant bickering and nasty treatment of your fellow board members. What is your point? You believe whatever you want, even if it is the
official report. Good for you. Some don't. Get over it. You are outnumbered by people who just do not trust anything this administration tells them.
We have never been given one reason to trust them. If you want to, it's your choice. But give it a rest. For the holidays? Truce?
I suspect you can't.

Nobody has all the answers.

37. Yes, this site is monitored.
pretty much everything is monitored in Murka.

After all, anyone opposed to RW authoritarians is suspect.

And no, the fear of spooks had nothing to do with the creation of DU's 9-11 ghetto. That was due to the obtrusive nature of so many arcane posts showing up in the GD mix and the fundamental unfriendliness of the DU powers-that-be toward "conspiracy theories" that make DUers look like "tin foil hat nutjobs." After that, it became an anal-retentive reaction or maybe an OCD sorting reaction to automatically put all "conspiracy theory" threads in one place.
