ADEN, Yemen -- Almost eight years after al-Qaeda nearly sank the USS Cole with an explosives-stuffed motorboat, killing 17 sailors, all the defendants convicted in the attack have escaped from prison or been freed by Yemeni officials.
REMINDER
John O'Neill was investigating the Cole attacks in 2001. He had wanted to travel to Yemen in search of the planners, but permission was refused by the White House. O'Neill then resigned in anger and took up his new post as security chief at the World Trade Center, starting in August 2001. Less than a month later, he was dead in the rubble.
