CIA planted evidence (Lockerbie)
"A FORMER Scottish police chief has given lawyers a signed statement claiming that key evidence in the Lockerbie bombing trial was fabricated.
The retired officer - of assistant chief constable rank or higher - has testified that the CIA planted the tiny fragment of circuit board crucial in convicting a Libyan for the 1989 mass murder of 270 people."

2. I'm certainly not surprised by this but this is still outrageous
How can we trust anything the CIA ever says or does?

5. Chief Investigator: Robert Mueller III
Let's also have a look to the top of the FBI. The chief investigator in Lockerbie was a well known military investigator under Bush senior and since 2001 the most important man of the FBI.

7. Questions
The two questions which most intrigued me are:
(1) How does he know?
(2) How come the CIA framed Libya only after the investigation had been ongoing for several months?

1) He _testified_ so that's what the content of is testimony his I assume
2) I assume it's hard to frame someone in an investigation if there's none. So they, obviously, had to wait for it to happen. But only several months into the investigation? I don't know why...

9. 1 and 2
I'm very interested to learn the contents of the testimony. While I don't think the police officer is lying, the truth of what he says obviously depends on whether the person who told him about it was telling the truth, which is hardly a shoo-in.

The investigation started immediately, the piece of circuit board - which was the evidence that pointed to Libya - was found months later. The main suggestion is that the US needed support from Syria (from where the bombers really came apparently) during the gulf war and thought that Libya would never give them up for trial anyway, so it wouldn't make much difference. I guess the Syrian organisation was backed by Hezbollah and funded by/linked to Iran. This would explain a lot. I don't believe or disbelieve it at this point, but it does seem to have the nasty "ring of truth" about it.

Found an interesting detail :

"The defence will also focus on FBI examiner J Thomas Thurman who identified a piece of the alleged bomb's circuit board as being exclusively used by Libyan intelligence. However, he was removed from his job when it came to light that his forensics lab was fabricating evidence to suit FBI inquiries in the World Trades Centre bombing and the Oklahoma bomb. He also does not have formal forensic qualifications.
Edwin Bollier, who manufactured the bomb circuit board, is also expected to claim that he supplied the same instruments to East German intelligence. One of his claims will be that the fragment of the circuit board could not have caused the explosion as it had never been used."
