http://watchingthewatchers.org/index.php?p=185Groupthink is the tendency to think what is popular or widely thought at any given time. It is the mob mentality, the following of the plurality, the simple efficiency of saying “ok, I’ll buy that". The troube is, once groupthink sets in, it becomes genuine opinion, then vested emotional baggage, and then irrefutable fact.
Not irrefutable because someone has proof to make it a verifiable fact, but irrefutable because, in their mind, the jury’s already back on the issue, whether it be war in a foreign country, marriage, or reality itself.
I mention it because it seems to me that, in this election, half the populace copped to groupthink. ‘Gays are icky’ went from a closeted feeling some people had to a national phenomenon, and 11 state constitutional amendments were passed banning gay marriage. ‘George Bush is a man of character’
