I need to indulge in a primal scream about my U.S. Rep.
Is this the proper place to do it? May I invite those with republican Reps to do the same?

1. My rep is the co-sponsor of the Hyde-Weldon Amendment.

“This law is necessary because of a systematic, nationwide campaign by pro-abortion pressure groups to use state and local government agencies to force a broad range of health care providers to participate in abortions,” said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson.

AAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! I don't know anyone who is PRO-abortion. How about just safe, legal and rare without actually advocating that it's THE thing to do. Sheesh!

What burns me is this dumbass piece of legislation was tacked on to an appropriations bill necessary for keeping our government in the business of being a government. Damn I wish the amendment process weren't so wide open sometimes.

2. The canned response I got from Rep. Weldon's office regarding my note to him about his failure to attend the Conyer's hearing reads suspiciously like an email someone else at DU posted the other day from his own rep. Clearly the republicans have a central clearing house of hack writers to brush off constituent concerns.

<end of rant> Thank you for listening.

1. Hit him in the press.
I was redistricted into a 12 term RTL moron's district, just a few terms after a lot of hard work had finally put a progressive in my last district. He won again this year, running basically unopposed. For the next two years, however, I plan to write one letter a month to each paper in the area, so at least in 2006 people will think twice before sending him back. So do the others around here who worked on Kerry's campaign.

All you can give it is your best shot. It's a marathon, stay focused and look for other sane people in your area.

4. We all (and THEY all) need to stop referring to pro-abortion
Your rant is justified. The term is PRO-CHOICE. Choice involves much more thatn abortion. We need to use the "C" word, not the "A" word.

5. Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA)
What an ASS.

H.J.RES.94 Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to establish English as the official language of the United States.

H.R.4033 To terminate the Federal tobacco quota and price support programs, to require the payment of fair and equitable compensation for tobacco quota holders and active tobacco producers adversely affected by the termination of such programs, and for other purposes

Yes, his two fine accomplishments in our great House of the People.

And thanks to blatant and vicious gerrymandering, my liberal-as-hell city (Charlottesville, VA) is included in the same district with the rest of rural/fundy/right-winger SouthCentral VA, including cities like Lynchburg (Jerry Falwell's secret fortress).

The man running against him in the last election, Al Weed, is a fine and honorable man. He's a progressive of the sort we love here at DU. I suggest you guys become more familiar with him -- he's quite a fellow.

Of course his character was assassinated in a series of attack ads featuring Goode on the steps of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia (how utterly hypocritical, at Mr. Jefferson's University and my alma mater, the bastard) proclaiming that Mr. Weed was in favor of same-sex marriage. That surely pissed off the Christian majority in Southern VA and won the man (ahem closet-case) his re-election (Charlottesville voted 77% for Kerry, btw.)

YAY fair representation!

6. Now that's just criminal.
If there were an omnipotent deity, Republicans would be struck dead by lightening if they stepped one foot on UVA property. ;)

7. Isn't california going to sue over this?
I'm pretty sure I heard California was suing the feds over this provision, saying it undermines their authority on the matter or some bullshit.
