Anybody like Dean but not The Dean People?
Mods pull this if it's inflammatory. BUTTTTTTTT..........

When I read about Dean in the running for the DNC my first thought was I hope he doesn't get it, but when I thought about it I know the reason is the bad taste in my mouth from dealing with "The Dean People" during the campaign.

I started out liking Dean in the primary and went to a meet up and was talking to some locals organizing for Dean. I changed my mind and figured he couldn't beat Idiot Son so stopped supporting him and the Dean People berated me and acted like I was a sellout. Pissed me off.

That's why I don't really support him for DNC either, I'm afraid his people will turn off voters especially moderates (a lot of democrats are moderates) with their over-bearing tactics.

If I'm wrong, please berate me and call me a sellout :))))

3. I'm a Dean person, do you hate me?
And Dean IS a moderate. Moderates don't turn away moderate voters, the BS media redefining the term "moderate" turns away moderate voters.

I started liking Kerry and the Kerry people.

5. Gee
I don't think that is imflamatory at all!!

I know many outstanding Dean supporters. If you have had one bad run in after another with Dean supporters I don't know what to say. This board has very fervent and sometimes outspoken supporters of all candidates. For every person who says that a Dean supporter left a bad taste in their mouth I can probably find some Dean supporters who say the same thing about an over zealous supporter of another candidate.

By the way, many Dean supporters are moderates themselves and some are independents and even a few republicans. We're not a bunch of looney liberals out to "piss off" moderates.

6. What tactics do you mean?
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:23 PM by imenja
Tactics are very important. It's important people know what formed your impression.
Edit: reading through these posts, they might reflect exactly what you mean. Comments like "get over it" don't win voters. Too many people imagine thoughtless behavior is somehow virtuous, that you're a "sell out," "moderate" or "DLC" if you seek to behave with civility.

7. Separate the person from the problem...
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:23 PM by mahina
Dean's IDEAS and ability to communicate the most powerful thoughts in the fewest possible syllables make him just the man for the job. I have never heard or read anyone who can communicate complex ideas so powerfully so succinctly, and with the microseconds we get to make our points we really need this man.

Dean person right here baby! Like me, don't like me, how you feel is 100% your business and none of my concern.

8. Most of Dean's real supporters tended to be quite reasonable.
There were alot of trolls who came here and USED Dean's name to shore themselves up and then proceeded to stir up greater dissent. Some even used Kucinich and Sharpton.

Not fair to put the onus on all Dean supporters.

9. Honestly?
I think you are taking a personal experience and extrapolating it unfairly. I had a very good experience with the "Dean people" in my area. They worked very well with the Kucinich camp and were extremely appreciative of Graham supporters who switched to Dean. Every single jumped into the Kerry campaign with both feet when Dean lost the nomination. The leader of the Dean MeetUp ended up with a paid position in the Kerry campaign for the last 30 days of the election cycle. It's all a matter of perspective. I'm very sorry you had such a negative experience. That would likely have turned me off as well.

Dean is no different.

And yes, they DO exist. I've encountered several here at DU.

Note: I did not support Dean for President. I do, however, ardently support Dean for DNC chair.

14. I've had my fair share of brawls with Dean folk
I'd be cautious in painting with too broad a brush. Sure, there are Dean supporters who are over-excitable, who will jump up and down on you if you don't support the guy, who will call you names if you question his stand on various issues, and who are generally abusive across the board. There are Dean supporters who see him as the end-all-be-all, and will brook no argument to the contrary.

But there are Kerry supporters, Clark supporters, Kucinich supporters, Edwards supporters, etc., who do exactly and precisely the same thing. Saying the phenomenon is limited to Dean supporters is inaccurate to the extreme.

15. I support him for DNC chair
A lot of his supporters berate people which is a huge turnoff but I don't think that should reflect on him(Obviously not all, just the loudest). He can't control people's behavior. I think he'd make a good chair. He's aggressive and no-nonsense and I think really need that right now.

17. Kind-of. A lot of them don't "get" Dean, I think.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:29 PM by LoZoccolo
I have to qualify that and say that I was a Dean person up until he suspended his campaign, so obviously I don't direct this at all his supporters as I was one myself.

That having been said, I don't think a lot of them really understand what Dean was trying to do. They do stuff like threaten to start a floor fight at the convention and talk about him being DNC chair as if that's the only thing that'll fix everything. Dean himself was always emphasizing that it was his volunteers' campaign - all this exalting of Dean is inappropriate when his goal is to get us to get up and work. A lot of that effort, obviously, will have nothing to do with pinning our hopes the man himself or his organization - it's almost irresponsible, the way I've seen some people acting.

I think Dean himself is at least an order of magnitude more practical than what I've seen from a lot of his supporters. How many people here were into Dean and were bitching about Kerry? Dean didn't do that.

18. i've been thinking about making this exact post ...
first, i won't generalize ... it's certainly absurd to say "Dean People" ... i'm sure many of Dr. Dean's supporters are great people to know ...

but i will say this, there seems to be this merry little band who feel compelled to launch into emotional attack mode at the slightest disagreement with something Dr. Dean has said or done ...

i've had a number of these experiences online just in the last week or so ...

another website that shall remain nameless even has a pro-Dean posting encouraging his supporters to "act nice" when talking to others ... what better advice could there be?

the big mouths think they're helping by being emotional, loud and arrogant ... but politics is about persuasion and persuasion begins with respect ...

not but an hour ago, i discussed this very point with mrs. wt2 ... she asked me whether this was because many of Dr. Dean's supporters were younger ... i have no idea whether that's the reason ...

after pointing out criticisms of specific statements Dr. Dean has made, I've been accused of having ulterior motives, misquoting him (even though i provided sources to his statements) and all sorts of other uncalled for abuse ... people are free to say and think whatever they want ... Note to Deanies: perhaps another style would be more effective ...

in conclusion, I'm supporting Dr. Dean for DNC Chair ... why? because the Party desparately needs major reform and no other candidate has the clout or credibility to do the job ...

21. It is a nonstop job defending Dean
especially from those all to ready to pick up the manufactured consensus to attack him - against their own best interests. And it pisses me off, after all he has done to bring hope and enthusiasm back into the Democratic party.

Yes, I attack Kerry, he was a copout from start to finish, but I voted for him, so don't say anything.

If I didn't care about all this, I wouldn't bother to say it.

22. 98% of Dean people are absolutely great
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:48 PM by jpgray
Dean himself is a great guy. But some of his supporters can really bring out a nasty side in me I don't like. An inability to admit your candidate is at fault in any scenario is troubling to me.

There are similarly troubling folks in every candidate's camp, though. Dean (and possibly Clark) just have enough DU representation for more of them to be heard, I guess.

28. Would not say
you were wrong however I would say it might be generalizing "Dean People". All could not be the same as some. If that makes sense to you.
The primaries are for shopping around
in my mind. I looked at all except Joe Liberman, already had opinion of him to the negative.
Some people are just overbearing so I try to overlook it since it was not Gov. Dean doing it.

I hope he gets the chairmanship because his fire is what we need.
So, I am a dean person but would never berate you or call you a sellout. Your opinion and your feelings are yours. :hi:
