I predict: the end of FOIA
let's face it, the most embarrassing leaks against this administration have come about from FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests. Not that they have suffered any consequences, but I bet, right about now, they're getting tired of the FOIA spigot.

I predict they find some quiet way to kill it, within the next year, probably camouflaged with another bill or on the late nite friday memory hole train.

1. Just classify everything in the name of National Security.
Can't have terrorists knowing their secrets.

2. Agree - they'll come up with some great sounding name
like 'protection from terrorist advantage in information' or some shit like that.
Bill Moyers told the story of LBJ signing the bill back in the 60s. IIRC going in to the ceremony LBJ groused to his followers that 'this &*(^%)** piece of shit is going to ruin America'. Then at the signing LBJ was all smiles proclaiming this would be the dawning of a new age in government accountability' etc.

3. Not a chance. The media and the legal community wouldn't allow this
Even the corporate media uses FOIA constantly. The legal community uses FOIA all over the place as well. As much as they might like to change this law, there would be way to great a backlash and they would alienate many current allies in the media by attempting something like this.

5. But they WOULD accept...
A third tier of information classified, "for public media only" or something like that...

In other words, using the SAME KIND OF FILTER they use to limit access to Presidential press conferences and public events, they could classify documents for some 'preferred' list of 'public information gatherers' rather than let any old "kook with a website" at them to possibly help the "terrorists"...

As for the legal community, they'd gladly roll over for a promise to lay off their contingency percentage fees, besides, where the F*CK is the legal community with all this talk about "tort reform"???

4. This already happened.
FOIA ain't what it used to be. They classify stuff for no reason now.
