Why is there NO interest in the DNC meeting being held in Phoenix this
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 04:02 PM by saracat
week? Everyone stays on this board and bitches yet there is little or NO interest when the Party meets and decides strategy and platforms! Why is that? There is absolutely NO MSM coverage, though this is the first time EVER the DNC has met outside of DC. I have grown to expect this from MSM, but I would think that progressive blogs would at least be commenting. I am especially disappointed that the Arizona Forum isn't excited.Where does everyone think the decisions are made?

2. No and that is why I am pissed. I am leaving to go to the resolutions
meeting in an hour, but even the Party itself is NOT demanding coverage.

3. What's on the agenda? Is C-Span going to cover this?
I usually catch the DNC meetings on C-Span and am hoping they're planning on airing this this weekend. Are there any specific topics being discussed (as in the early primary states at the last meeting)?

6. Joe Rospars will be blogging from there.
He blogs at the DNC and at Kos...maybe MyDD.

There is a whole lot of interest. There just isn't any coverage.

I don't know who else will be blogging.

8. Even the DNC, from what I could see, hasn't posted anything!
Part of what I am bitching about is there isn't even any demomstrated interest on DU. Everyone whines but no one wants to take the issues to the source.I had hoped Democrats would be interested in the Democratic Party, but I may have been wrong. Grrr. Forgive me. I need to vent.
And then I am going to bitch in person LOL!

11. Could it be because it will be confrontational?
I have posted it here a lot. No one paid attention. I have some folks who will keep me sort of posted, but I am not going to blog it.

I do know that one progressive group was planning to protest outside, set up tables to get their agenda across. Many of the ones in this group want 3rd party now, and they are not willing to give Dean a chance to change things by refinancing. They consider Dean is a tool of the establishment. They were quietly planning this sort of protest, and Howard Dean and the progressive caucus (I assume) invited them to join the conference.

I thought that was nice.

20. That isn't quite true, if you are referring to the PDA Meeting?
The Progressive Democrats of America have been formally adopted by our State Party. They are an official adjunct to us now. They are going to speak to DNC members and they do have tables outside. There is also a PDA event tonight that is being chaired by our Congressman RaulGravija and Harry Mitchell our AZ Chair.. It also involves several other state chairs and Tom Hadyen. We also have the Code Pink ladies in our fold.

23. There are things far more than what you said.
There are some who do not have the intentions of supporting the Democratic Party. For those who do, fine. I think for those who don't, they are playing some risky games at a dangerous time in our history.

It is not time for a 3rd party right now, not time to undermine the DNC.

28. Well, the PDA event is even listed on our website and I don't think we are
sponsoring an organization that is detrimental to the party. They are "out there a bit but we need them as much as anyone else. And they do NOT say anything about a Third Party. That being said, there may be others who think differently. But with all the people involved in tonights event, I wouldn't be surprised to see Dean attend. He will be attending three special conferences I am invited to tommorrow. I was honestly surprised at how quickly PDA was mainstrimed within our Party. Their stated goal is to "reform from within". I think that is a good thing ,but each to his own.

32. I am not going to elaborate more right now.
I just know that our local Democrats are going to have to deal soon with the combination of Greens, Kucincich supporters, and Nader folks....and we know we are going to have to deal with their desire to split us, just as we are getting organized. It will destroy us here.

Yes, some are planning on 3rd party. Some are not aware. Some are simply wanting change, and I fear they will be taken advantage of. I hate that.

It is hard to tell the difference, but many do not support the party at all...they are using it to divide it. Many endorsed Dean for chair just for that reason. They felt if he were there in that position, they could hurt the party more.

Some did not have that intent. Some did.

I got a call from someone locally who is a peace activist like we are. She is getting her eyes opened, and she is hurting. She will not leave the party, and she is angry she was used that way.

35. You are very right in some instances. I will keep my eyes and ears open
but so far, with PDA, can't speak for all the gruops, it seems to be working out okay with the AZ Dems. Maybe we feel absorbing them does us the least harm? But I know what you are saying.

33. Geez, mf, why don't they just join the Greens WITHOUT damaging Democrats?
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 06:09 PM by blm
I think it's terrible that they claimed to support Dean, but don't understand the larger picture he has to deal with on a daily basis.

Once that person earns your trust they should earn your support for all the right reasons.

I think Dean is doing pretty well, and since he brought up machine fraud in his last letter, I am even more pleased and supportive.

13. I'm in Phoenix and I don't even hear anything about it.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 04:19 PM by AZBlue
This may partially be due to the Arizona or Phoenix office of the Dem party. Let me just say this about them: they are so unorganized and inefficient it almost makes you want to become Republican. (I said ALMOST - nothing is quite that bad, not even them.)

The ONLY communication I've gotten from them about the meeting is about one fundraising dinner that's completely out of my price range. Other than that it appears that I'm not invited to participate. And those two sentences pretty much sum up their attitude here: I've called, e-mailed, gone to meetings, offered to help, told them exactly what I can do and what my background is, signed up for every newsletter and list you can imagine...no use. If you don't have a LOT of money to donate, they have no use for you. They don't want your time or effort. I could go on and on with examples of poor communication, lack of organization and general chaos, but let me instead just say that it's EXTREMELY frustrating. There are several good Dem party leaders here but unfortunately they are surrounded by sub-par staff.

As for media coverage, our newspaper, The Arizona Republic, is better know as The Arizona Republican. With very good reason.

Tuscon, an event that has already taken place. It is typical of our lack of PR.The link has nothing to do with the DNC Committee Meeting in Phoenix.

16. Probably no coverage because, even though they are meeting...
They aren't really making news. From Dean himself:

Q: What are the goals or themes of this week's DNC meetings?

DEAN: We have two meetings a year. We have now decided we are going to bring these meetings to states where we can have special and specific impacts. We believe that we can win in Arizona in the presidential race in 2008, and we believe we can win a Senate seat in Arizona. And so we wanted to talk about Democratic values and Democratic issues in Arizona. The themes are going to be very simple. We want honesty back in government. We want a balanced budget and jobs that stay in America. We want health insurance for all our people like they do in 36 other countries. We want a strong national defense based on telling the truth. And we want a strong public-education system because that's the way that people advance in America.

Q: Will you adopt platforms this week?

DEAN: We don't usually do that. Usually, we devise ways of improving our ability to get votes, in terms of mechanics. For example, we're on the ground everywhere now, and that wasn't the case before. We're putting together a new centralized voter file that wasn't the case before. So most of these meetings are about mechanics. There will be some resolutions, and there will be some policy discussions, but most of it is about mechanics.
