Political trash-talking gets literal for Texan
By FRANK MICKADEIT
The Orange County Register
Is John Campbell, Republican for Congress, a used condom? Or is he merely a despicable person?
(snip)
The headline on the flier: "Warning: A Vote for Lying ScumbagJohn Campbell is Hazardous to Your State and County" (emphasis in original). It goes on to rip Campbell's vote for benefits for some undocumented residents and questions the sincerity of his remorse for having done so. "A terrorist could open a bank account, mortgage a 'safe house' in your neighborhood to house his terrorist friends, take pilot lessons ... because of short-sighted, idiotic, back-stabbing traitors like John Campbell," it says. It then touts Minuteman Jim Gilchrist as the only alternative to this antichrist.
The mailer is the work of Texan Tom Owens, who describes himself on his Web site, www.voteamericafirst.com, as "conservative Republican" and says "my family and I are traditional Christians." I called the ol' boy yesterday down at his place in Lumberton, Texas (pop. 8,000). He's never met Gilchrist – he simply supports his illegal immigration stance. Two O.C. politicos I know estimate that cost him $17,500.
I asked Owens how "traditional" it is for Christians to send mailers calling someone a used condom to 70,000 homes, many which have little kids who this Christmas season now will be asking, "Mommy, what's a 'scumbag?'" and wondering whether Santa might leave one under the tree for them. "The dictionary says it means 'despicable person,'" Owens told me. "I've never heard it used as a slang expression for used condom." (To be fair, it doesn't seem most modern dictionaries include the more, umm, literal definition.)
