FRESH OFF THE WIRE: One charge against Delay dropped...
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 05:23 PM by BlueAwards
Judge tosses conspiracy charges against ex-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, but allows money-laundering charges, according to AP.

"A judge dismissed the conspiracy charges Monday against Rep. Tom DeLay but refused to throw out the money-laundering counts, dashing the Texas congressman's hopes for now of reclaiming his post as House majority leader. "

9. Isn't that kind of hard to do?
Don't you need, like, accomplices at the bank or at least someone to help feed quarters into the machines?

8. This is just the start for Tom .....
The money laundering case is air tight ..... They have the checks.

And this does not touch his buddies Abramoff & company.

11. The title is misleading because it is incomplete.
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 05:22 PM by Neil Lisst
The best charge, the one for money laundering, remains.

The conspiracy charge was the weaker charge.

He still goes to trial and he still goes in Travis County.

Good day for our side.

14. Do you know when the trial is
or will they set a trial date now and then continue it? Do you have a sense of whether the court in Travis County will rush through this or whether the defense will dare to stall it--I say dare, because with other stuff out there, they may need to stall in order to clean up the entire mess with one giant plea bargain involving not just Tommie boy, but others who will be compelled to accept some offer in order to save a few decades of striped wardrobes.

18. Don't know when it is, but it will likely be put off some time.
If I had to guess, I'd guess about 6 months from now.

Both sides probably want it to be before the election. DeLay wants to be acquitted, and thinks he can be.

16. good. I hope I didn't sound offensive. Didn't mean to.
I just knew you had time to change it, and hoped you would. Didn't really have time to stop and talk then.

I wanted to make sure people knew he was still going to trial in 06 on a good charge.

20. "DeLay's Money Laundering Charges Upheld"! (Different headline)
"By APRIL CASTRO, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - A judge dismissed a conspiracy charge Monday against Rep. Tom DeLay but refused to throw out the far more serious allegations of money-laundering, dashing the congressman's hopes for now of reclaiming his post as House majority leader..."

21. This the significant portion of the story
Word had it that if resolution of these charges went beyond January 1, he'd be replaced as House Majority leader.

With a trial coming, he's effectively going to be turned back into just another Congresscritter.... without power of the Majority Leader's office and because even repubs hate tom delay, he might as well pack it up and go home.

22. I'm optimistic too...
But I think the title is appropriate. All of us would have loved to keep that charge in there, and sure we're happy they didn't drop everything, but I for one, hoped that NOTHING would have been dropped.

23. I wished too that both stuck. But I must admit that imagining
Mr. arrogant, smug having to accept even one charge and deal with it is very gratifying.
