FactCheck.org is back!
defending the GOP again!

http://www.factcheck.org/article362.html

Radio ads being run by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee refer to three Ohio Republicans as "rubberstamp Republicans" for initiatives supported by the President. In fact, their voting records are about average for Republican House members.

The ads also say all three members cast "the" deciding vote for a budget bill. Actually, 217 House members voted for it, and it passed by a two -vote margin.

Nothing in these ads is false, but we offer some clarification and added context.

2. their Halliburton article reads like a joke
http://www.factcheck.org/article261.html

Cheney says he takes no part in matters relating to Halliburton, and so far we've seen no credible allegation to the contrary. Time magazine reported in its June 7 edition that an e-mail from an unnamed Army Corps of Engineers official stated that a contract to be given to Halliburton in March 2003 "has been coordinated w VP's office." But it wasn't clear who wrote that e-mail, whether the author had direct knowledge or was just repeating hearsay, or even what was meant by the word "coordinated," which could mean no more than that somebody in Cheney's office was being kept informed of contract talks.

Indeed, a few days later it was revealed that Cheney's chief of
staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby was informed in advance that Halliburton was going to receive an earlier contract in the fall of 2002 -- to secretly plan post-war repair of Iraq's oil facilities. But being informed of a decision after it is made is a far cry from taking part in making it. And according to the White House, Libby didn't even pass on the information to Cheney anyway.

So to sum up, this Kerry ad's implication that Cheney has a financial interest in Halliburton is unfounded and the $2 million figure is flat wrong.

5. As much as it pains me
Cheney is most likely clear on benefitting from Halliburton contracts today. He had a deferred comp package that paid him after he left. If Hallburton went under, he'd lose that comp. He did a clever thing, he took out an insurance policy that would cover his deferred comp if they went bankrupt. Also, his stock options are being exercised and sold by a third party. The profits are headed to three charities. No I don't have a link but will try to get one.

Now let's address this. Cheney is enriching his oil cadre. I have no doubt.

6. don't forget Scooter
just because Scooter knew Halliburton was getting the contracts, it doesn't mean he told Cheney.

7. What will be interesting to see
is where Cheney lands when he leaves office. How much will he make? Is this something he has set up for his retirement? What do you think?
