Poll question: Who Has The "Aw Shucks" Likeability Factor For '08
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 03:59 PM by ruggerson
Who is the warmest, wittiest, most self deprecatory candidate for '08.

And don't just vote for whom you WANT for President, that isn't what this poll is about.

Vote for whom you think is the best "aw shucks" kind of guy/gal.

Give examples if you want.

1. Edwards
I like Clark, Feingold, Edwards and Warner, in that order, at the moment.

3. The Awe Shucks factor? Nobody that I'm aware of, on either side!
I'm trying to think of all the possible candidates on either side and I can't think of ANY that would fit that description.

6. Where's Feingold?
Both Clark and Feingold can be self-deprecating, witty and down-to-earth. I think Clark has the experience, intelligence and strength to do what needs to be done to take back America for the common good - not the corporate greed. But if Wes doesn't run, Feingold is looking good to me. Edwards "folksiness" seems put-on to me. NCarolinians aren't too fond of the boy.

replaced Boxer with Feingold. He is probably a more likely candidate than she is.

Why would you say otherwise? He is one of our own and there is a lot of Southern state pride wrapped up in those fond sentiments.

Likeability, the skill to connect with voters, is critical for a candidate to be successful.

22. Yup
I was listening to his interview with Franken and he was talking about when he told his wife that he got nominated for a Grammy she told him to shovel the snow.

I don't like how this question was framed aw-shucks it has too many negative connotations too many. I think the better question is who's the most personable, most down to earth candidate and on that list I'd say Feingold then Edwards.

36. Exactly right
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 03:11 PM by Jai4WKC08
People who don't know much about Wes Clark tend to judge him according to their preconceptions of what a four-star general must be (and I hate to admit, most of 'em probably are). And those who just hear him lecture or read what he writes usually perceive his exceptional intellect and intensity, and many have their own preconceptions about what extremely smart people are like as well.

But Clark is different on both counts. He really is a helluva nice guy, who cares deeply about people.

If this question is a DU version of "who would you like to have a beer with" (as someone suggested down-stream), Clark wins my vote hands down. But how well that quality comes across on the TV screen, I'm not so sure. It certainly seems to in the town-hall and smaller venues, but not necessarily from behind a podium.

26. Won't vote in this poll, cause "Aw Shucks" is no longer effective, IMO....
I would not consider Clark as having a lot of that quality, as I find him to be too intense and pensive to give off that ultimate "aw shucks" vibe. But I will say that Clark is one who has accomplished much in his life but rarely touts his horn,

but what Clark does give off is very dire for Democrats to generate.....It's that "I'm gonna kick your ass if you get out of line with me" vibe.....which is more of what we need now as opposed to the 1993 "Aw Shucks" Clinton thingie.

Edwards' comes off like a used car salesman to me, so no, I didn't vote for him either. Those thumbs in the air, and the video of him "doing his hair" (proving that he's very much into the "choreography" of things) or Saying he's sorry that he co-sponsored the IWR 2.5 years after the fact.... shows him to be actually quite calculative with the "sneaky finger to the wind" mentality, to the trained eye. Image means a lot to John Edwards, IMO...and that doesn't equate to "Aw Shucks" far as I'm concerned (remember the twin coats with John Kerry? Couldn't he have refused?).

Warner, I haven't seen him in action enough as of yet.....but the calculating air that I attributed to Edwards, I have not seen in Warner. He seems natural enough.

Feingold appears not give much of a damn what others think of him, which is as good, if not better than Aw shucks".

I consider "Aw Schucks" to be quite passe....like as far back as 1993. Bush has been doing the Aw Schucks for quite some time now....and has played it out passed its time.

2008 ain't gonna be about "Aw Shucks" I imagine.....not with all of the fucked up shit that we will have to clean up!

27. I still think we should go outside politics for a presidential candidate
without reiterating names that have been tossed about, a non-politician has the advantage of not being beholden to corporate funders and the political establishment -- something voters would welcome, imo . . .

unless we correct the way votes are cast and tabulated, though, it won't make a whole lot of difference who we run . . .

29. Is this the DU version of "who'd you have a beer with"?
because it's just as relevant. NONE of the candidates have that effect on me - maybe a movie star or two - but I want them keeping their day job. My president - I want to have integrity, courage and brains.

32. It was tough between
Warner and Edwards. I like Warner because he is intelligent but he also comes across as "down to earth" and can connect to people well. I saw him at a New Hampshire event not too long ago and when he was talking to people he connected with them and made eye contact and all that which is good. I like Edwards because he just bounces with his personality and is always shiny. I like that about him. :)

he has a down home folksiness that's very appealing. He's also a straight talker and gets his point across very succinctly. He's got a kind of "Progressive cowboy" quality to him.
