4. Syriana is not some "popcorn" flick
It is very much a thinking person's movie. The story is fictional but represents a real-world situation. There is alot of subtlety.
If anyone you know is a follower of the "They hate us for our freedoms" bullshit shovelled by the administration and their media mouthpieces, Syriana is definitely NOT for them. They probably won't get it anyway.

2. I did see it tonight...

I have too say it was difficult to digest, too many situations at once. The obvious topic of the movie is that oil businesses seem to be a very disgusting cult where big companies and the federal government seduce each other. Basically, the US Intelligence "clean" those who oppose doing business with the big US companies or play the "terrorists" card on them (Tag them as being with the Terrorits if they won't do business with them).

3. A very confusing film, alas. Good intentions, taut and intriguing, but...
...so many loose threads left hanging in the end. Not as good as Clooney's 'Good Night and Good Luck.'

8. The screen writer was on Charlie Rose last night
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 06:20 AM by DoYouEverWonder
The story is based a real agent and on the agents' and his own experiences in the Middle East. Most of the story, though fictionalized, is based on things that really happened. After listening to this fellow (sorry didn't get his name) I was pretty shook up and I don't get shaken easily. Especially after he told the story about the rich men in NYC who meet to decide which country to overthrow next like they were playing a game of chess. Very chilling stuff.

10. The agents name was Robert Baer
He wrote a book called "See No Evil". I have seen him interviewed a few times. One thing that is true, is that he was "made" in the somewhere in the mideast where he was captured and tortured.

9. The negative reviews mostly complain about
it being "disjointed." I'll see it anyway. 7.0 on IMDB.com and 75 on rottentomatoes.com

11. That's the style of the screenwriter/director Stephen Gaghan
He also wrote "Traffic". If I remember correctly "Traffic" was directed by Stephen Soderberg.
It is a number of story lines that run paralell to each other but have a common thread. In the end all of the stories collide in some way. "Syriana" is done the same way. You do have to pay attention and not just sit back and "enjoy the flick".

12. Hell, I sure did pay attention, knowing fully well beforehand...
about how many very bright people (with much higher IQs than my average one) I know found it a confused mess. People were very quiet at the end, more from being confused than stunned. Too cryptically clever by half.

I've seen 'Traffic', which was not hard to follow at all! (And inferior to the British 6-hour miniseries original, by the by).

Wonder if Steven Soderbergh should have directed and helped edit it, and not just produce the film.

At any rate, the theatre was relatively crowded (for a small town filled with many religious conservatives who mostly went to see the 'Narnia Chronicles' on two screens) for a clearly 'liberal' movie. Gladdened my heart.
