Although his comments on the environment prompted a diplomatic furore this week, he claimed responsibility for U.S. concessions in the softwood dispute.
"I'm going to call it like I see it," Martin told The Vancouver Sun in an exclusive interview shortly after he appeared in Montreal with Bill Clinton, the former Democratic U.S. president who is far more popular among Canadians than Bush.
Martin, who will arrive in B.C. for his first campaign visit early next week, triggered a diplomatic storm this week by saying that the Bush administration lacks a "global conscience" by not signing on to Kyoto commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
