The Current Character of the DLC--Your Informed Opinions Wanted
'Llo Brethren,

OK, this is hardly an original idea for a discussion thread, but...

What is your opinion of the DLC?

My take on the DLC is that when it was originally founded, some of its members were indeed of the Lieberman ilk. However, a fair portion were not; such individuals simply believed (rightfully, I feel) that the Democratic Party was mired in a dogmatic adherence to a number of dated, tired ideas. What was needed was new thinking. However, they did not advocate a move right-ward; Republican-Lite did not fairly describe them. (Al Gore, I believe, is a good example.)

But...

I am embarrassed to say that, while I certainly keep up-to-date on the actions of Democratic elected officials, I have not taken a hard look at the character of the organization recently; it may well now be almost entirely the land of the Liebermanites.

Any and all feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Robert

1. Republican lite is a great label for Al Gore

I mean, seriously I love Al Gore, but he isn't the progressive everyone here believes him to be.

He has come out against the Iraq war but during the Clinton years he was a cheerleader for removing Saddam.

Welfare Reform was his baby.

He had a plan for Faith Based Initiatives that was extremely similar to John Ashcroft's.

He only became pro-choice when he took the national stage.

If we're actually going to stick to facts in this thread, there some cold hard ones for you.

2. dlc are certainly repuke-lite and have been for several years

çlinton and gore were socially liberal, environmentally conscious, and financially conservative. (for the most part)

the current DLC are repug-lite. too cowardly to be dems, too totally $owned$ by the corps and greed to care about the people.

i am at the point where a candidate with dlc backing is almost as repugnant to me as a repug.

i want strong dems speaking out about what i believe is right and taking stands for the people and environment.

conyers, waters, byrd, kennedy, kucinich, dean.

i say screw the dlc.

3. The DLC simply didn't understand
that what they considered time worn and outdated issues that needed to be discarded were usually the bread and butter issues that got ordinary working class Americans off their couch and to the polls on election day. For years, their quest for the new and different has been pro corporate and anti labor, offering people of modest means absolutely nothing while the GOP offered them the illusion of tax cuts.

That the DLC have been wrong since the very beginning can be measured in two ways: the voting turnout and the loss of all 3 branches of government.

I just hope we can recover from this failed experiment in Democratic conservatism.

4. of course, and once again, you have no evidence to support...
...your claim that the DLC has lost all three branches of government.

...and voter turnout has increased in recent years.
