United For Peace & Justice dumps International ANSWER

(snip)
I was pleased to see that United for Peace and Justice finally let go of the achilles heel of the American anti-war movement: the stalinist organization International A.N.S.W.E.R.:

(below is the preamble from UFPJ's decision)
In recent months, a difficult and controversial aspect of our work has been our engagement with International A.N.S.W.E.R in co-sponsoring the September 24, 2005 Washington, D.C. Rally and March. Following this experience, and after thorough discussion, the national steering committee of United for Peace and Justice has decided not to coordinate work with ANSWER again on a national level.

I can recall from personal experience how frustrated I've been over the past three years watching ANSWER speakers hijack the antiwar protests to talk about their own pet causes -- starting chants about the greatness of Fidel Castro -- and how the media used ANSWER to tar and undermine the entire movement. No doubt, thousands were turned off from sticking with the cause to end the invasion and occupation of Iraq because of the nutty speakers they put on stage. ANSWER tainted the whole thing.

UFPJ's reason for cutting further participation with ANSWER was cool-headed and on professional terms (I've posted the entire announcement from the UFPJ steering commitee in the extended post -- there's a lot of backstory).

I'll bet dollars for dimes that the next UFPJ war protest will leave regular Americans feeling like they want to do it again.

1. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me.
I know there are a lot of people who will disagree with me, but I truly believe this is a GREAT thing.

2. ANSWER did a good job with the Bush '05 inauguration/coronation
That is the best I can say for them. Their speakers for the antiwar rallies were a bunch of screechy, disheveled pinheads. I am not describing the outsiders like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and John Thomas of the United Church of Christ, who felt they had to extend a message despite the company.

3. My local UPJ chapter will be glad to know this
as it is made up of exRepublicans who saw the light and worked for Kerry during the last election, plus the local environmentalists plus New Agers, etc. etc.

4. They should add WBAI to the list in my opinion
They should of heard Gary Null,http://www.garynull.com/ on the radio yesterday--he was furious over WBAI. Gary Null was my favorite reporter-- at WBAI-- before he got fired. My guess he would say add WBAI to the list. I would agree with him 100%.

As a pacifist, I can say that WBAI does not follow the principles of pacifism--which were the principles-- that were the foundation of the station during its creation.

And, in reality United Peace and Justice--I am not familiar with them, is actually and a time in our history-- in America-- were dissent and liberalism is growing again. The peace movement-- by and large-- has not existed as a movement in the USA from the times of around the ending of the Vietnam war, but with the stealing of the election in 2000-- many people are saying what is all this liberalism stuff anyway.
