Neil Lisst cartoons: Weekend review - all 5 cartoons
I'm posting all five of this week's cartoons on this post, with a few notes, for those who wish to see all them in one place without going to the site or looking up each day.

Monday - Ludacrismas
We continued our theme regarding the much trumpeted and entirely bogus "War on Christmas." It's really a War on non-Christians by uberChristians who think everyone should celebrate Christmas or shut the hell up. If any group has a reason to complain, it's Jews, it's those who celebrate Kwanzaa, or some other group who doesn't celebrate Christmas. It's ludricrous, the whole brouhaha about the alleged War on Christmas.

Tuesday - Happy Holidays
We wanted to present the true spirit of Christmas, and indeed, the spirit of the man around whom that holiday is celebrated. Inclusion and acceptance of others was the lesson of The Good Samaritan. We present a cartoon which appears to give Kwanzaa and Hanukkah equal billing with Christmas. Well, that's by design. We recognize the equality of each person who celebrates THEIR holiday, not the number of people in society who share that belief.

Wednesday - Hillary and the Flag
This one stirred some controversy. While we understand when presidential aspirants start trying to fill in the weaknesses of their history, they sometimes give up too much to get there. This is one such time, and I'm not the only Democrat who thinks so, Hillary fans.

Thursday - KONG
It's a new movie, catching headlines, in the public eye. Some cartoons we do just because we feel like it. My cartoon partner wanted something with KONG in it, so we did this. The art is great. The script, forgettable.

Friday - An Army of One
This one also stirred controversy. It's factually accurate. It may not tell a complete story, but it's not intended to do so. It's meant as a metaphor for what is happening with the war in Iraq. War profiteers are making obscene profits, while soldiers bodies get shipped freight. Why? Money. It's cheaper. It's emblematic of the way the Bush administration doesn't spend the money needed on body armor, on armored equipment, on taking care of the troops properly after they are dead or injured.

5.  It's quite possible that many of our elected representatives actually
believe that showing respect for the American flag is a good thing.

8. That's not the issue. That's a rationalization.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 07:09 AM by Neil Lisst
The flag is a symbol of our freedoms. Respecting the flag is not the same as increasing criminal penalties for those who use their first amendment right to freely condemn US actions, including burning the flag.

It's a piece of cloth. Don't tell me anyone should go to jail for burning it. Hate on them, if you must, but don't punish them. That's just anti-American.

I hope you're cozy over there with the ghost of Joe McCarthy.

like scaaary video games.

On edit: seriously, to criminalize flag desecration is to idolize the flag, and idolatry is a meaningless exercise.

9. Yes she is
I don't care for it on either side.

I am, however, grateful that I will no longer have to hit flag burners when I swing my dead cat. :hide:

12. Too funny!! Got a good laugh!
Thanks for some levity.

Next week I'm talking about the fat cats in the Democratic Party, among other pressing topics. Monday we'll piss off anyone who is a fundie. Tuesday, we're going to piss off the wingers who believe all the BS stories Team Bush issues from Iraq. Wednesday, probably the Dem Fat Cats. Thursday, I'm working on something for the spying on Americans.

They could change order, or we could sub an idea.

Thank God someone is doing something about the problem of flag burning, because those guys are ruining America. Priorities!!

14. I was a little worried posting that
This is a huge enclave of cat lovers (I myself have a cat-dog) so I thought that, while it is funny, it might not be perceived as such.

BTW, I know I've followed your stuff elsewhere but I'm chagrined to say it doesn't come back to me where. Could you toot your horn for a minute and help refresh an old lady's memory?

18. I don't know. We've only been around 90 days.
Here's the backstory.

In August, Cindy Sheehan blew the lid off the Bush Reign of Error with her stand in Crawford. That told me Bush was finally vulnerable, that the time was ripe for Dems to make a move.

Then in late August, Katrina hit, and it dominated news the first week of September, as Americans watched Bush drop the ball. The public dissatisfaction with Bush was growing.

I don't feel like getting on the campaign trail any more. Truthfully, I don't know I could do it again without choking the daylights out of someone. Instead, I'll focus on the body politic, the dialogue that shapes the direction we go. That means the blogosphere, the internet, and print media - where the thinkers are.

I've done some selected cartoon projects in the past for politics, but never by name, going back two decades. Nothing anyone would know, campaign stuff.

I thought up Neil Lisst the week of September 3rd, as I contemplated how to attack this problem, how to springboard off of the Katrina disaster into the issues I wanted to address.

3. Hillary shouldn't wrap herself in the flag if she doesn't want to hear it.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 06:43 AM by Neil Lisst
She's desperate to be perceived as "the middle."

She's going too far, and as a good Democrat, I'm commenting on it. She's hated by about 75% of the posters here, so I'm not alone in my lack of respect for her position on this.

I'm glad you liked the other ones. I don't expect anyone to like all of them.

I don't think any fan of Hillary's would like this cartoon.

I think I can say they hate it, to a person.

Also, you responded to me instead of him. Most of us are narcissistic enough about our posts that we monitor all comments but he might not be like that so you might want to consider posting your response to his original comment.

21. The War to End all Jobs
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 09:23 AM by Neil Lisst
It means that we have an army of illegal immigrants who are occupying the country. They take jobs that should be going to American citizens, and they take them at wages below market or below the legal rate. They tax our social services, which means the public subsidizes all the businesses that violate the law and hire them.

The Democratic coalition includes all the working poor of America, and they are getting killed by illegal immigrants who take jobs for less.

The lowest published estimate of the number of Mexicans is 5 million, which is estimated to be about two thirds of all illegal immigrants.

25. The war to end all living wage jobs.
The employers who hire these workers are destroying our middle class. Maybe we should ask them why they hate America.

26. I'm sympathetic to those already here. But here's my solution.
We don't make all those who are here illegally go back. We make them become citizens, and do all the things necessary, OR they have to go back. We stop the flow of millions of illegals at the borders, and we make their employers reimburse the government social agencies for the services they must provide the illegals.

Finally, we assess punitive fines against abusers like Walmart, as in Billions, not millions.

15. Thank you! We pour a lot of ourselves into it.
Props to my Canadian artist and partner in this cartoon. It's 50% Canadian content! I write 'em. He draws 'em. And I'm kind of a prick to work with. We have a pile of scrapped cartoons. We ditch at least one a week he's drawn, and at least one a week I've written.

We had two on Harriet Miers that just never were right. When it's done, I know it.
