This week, the US House of Representatives voted 251-174 to extend the Patriot Act, the single most damaging piece of legislation to ever come out of the bowels of Congress.
Worse yet, 44 out of the 251 were members of the so-called opposition party, the Democrats.
Why does this not surprise me? The democrats in the House are used to laying down and letting the republicans walk all over them, so why not with this also? The only true opposition party in Congress, in my estimation, is the Congressional Black Caucus.
These patriots know how it feels to be oppressed and several have worked hard in Congress to ensure that oppression does not occur.
But, with the Patriot Act, no one is exempt from domestic spying, or as I call it, domestic terrorism. I mean, isn’t that what spying does? Doesn’t the idea that your government is spying on you scare you? Well, if it doesn’t it ought to. It terrifies me.
Regardless of what the right wingers feed you, the truth is that you too may come under scrutiny for a book you read, or for a magazine subscription you buy, or even for websites you decide to visit out of curiosity. You may have your phone tapped WITHOUT a court order because your president doesn’t trust you. You may be hauled off to secret prisons that move as fast as they get started.
You may be like the four ‘terror suspects’ that never were questioned once by police in 4 years, languishing in a cell unable to even plead your innocence.
And all because the House of Representatives decided they like domestic spying. They like compiling lists of people who are ‘threats’. If they keep passing legislation like the Patriot Act, they can make that list longer- because people in this nation aren’t going to stand for much more of this. As they rightly shouldn’t.
