As Bolivians go to polls, U.S. (BUSH)watches, worries
This is a good background article on the new left in South/Central America and why Bush is upset.

As Bolivians go to polls, U.S. watches, worries
By DAVID ADAMS, Times Latin America Correspondent
Published December 17, 2005

MIAMI - When Bolivia votes, normally no one takes much notice.

The small land-locked country of only 9-million hasn't gotten much attention since its silver mines were exhausted by the Spanish empire.

But Sunday's election could change that. At stake is not just the country's political future, but what some see as a radical anti-American, left-wing resurgence sweeping Latin America.

As the dominos have fallen one by one, U.S. officials have grown more wide-eyed and alarmed.

2. amazing... they sit there scratching their heads
wondering how these 'dominos' can keep 'falling'.

You think it just might be the imperial arrogance of the US? :eyes:

3. If these were left-wing military regimes, then yes I would be concerned.
However, these are democratically elected movements all across the continent and therefore are the people's business and not ours. The way the Bushes are talking you would think we are going to have another round of coups just like in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

4. We've got to end the war on drugs
I read through that article, and it's obvious the drug war is not only hurting people inside the US, but it's also being used as a weapon against poor people outside the US in places like Bolivia. Legalize all of it. If you don't like it's ill effects, treat it the same way as you treat tobacco, tax it to death and use the revenue to treat drug addiction.
