The Question Bush should - but won't - be asked by the lapdog press:
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 09:49 PM by beaconess
"Mr. President. You have defended your authorization of the wiretapping of American citizens in contravention of the FISA statute, by claiming that the Constitution and war authorization give you the power to take any action you think necessary to fight the war on terror, regardless whether you are otherwise authorized or forbidden by law.

"If that's the case, Sir, why are you so exorcised about the Senate's delay in reauthorizing certain provisions of the Patriot Act since, by your own declaration, you already have all of the powers the Patriot Act supposedly would grant to you? If, God forbid, we are attacked again while the Patriot Act is in limbo, wouldn't that be YOUR fault for not taking necessary actions to prevent the attack, and not the fault of Congress?"

5. He was asked a similar question today.
After Bush said that only calls to-or-from the US were bugged, a female reporter asked if he has the authority to do that in the name of national security, why not bug phone calls within the US without a warrant, too?

He didn't really answer the question, but just answered that they get warrants for phone calls within the US.

6. Yes - that's just the point
If he insists that he has the constitutional and statutory authority to eavesdrop under these circumstances, why does he need any authorization to do what the Patriot Act allows? In fact, under his reasoning, he can do anything he damned well pleases, no matter what the law says.
