DEFEND THE CROSSES!!!
This woman says "I'd much rather fight for the crosses than worrying about the President listening to phone calls or taking down names of protestors. Religion is SO much more important to me. Family and religion. That's all that matters in the end!"

The crosses she refers to have been erected by the side of the road, by the Utah department of transportation, to commemorate some troopers who died there. American Atheists is suing the county (and possibly the state) under the establishment clause of the constitution.

And this woman cares more about these dumb crosses than about her own civil liberties!!!

2. She cares more about her crosses than her religion then.
She and the rest of her kind who don't know or care enough about their faith need to go somewhere to see what religious oppression actually is. It doesn't exist here for so-called "Christians."

I'm fighting against that.

11. Exactly
There are some countries where Christian's are beaten and raped. No where here does that happen. If she doesn't care about the Constiution than she's just selfish in my opinion. And how does she know she isn't getting spied on? We all could be.

4. There was a big fuss here about crosses on state property at an
intersection where some drunk and speeding teens were killed. The state told the families, "look, your memorial has been up for over a year. They have memorials at cemetaries; we need to pave a bypass through here." They gave them another month to clear out what they wanted, and then the state came in and started their roadwork.

I fail to see how someone can expect to have a permanent memorial at a spot where someone died. They certainly don't (and can't) do that in hospital rooms. Yet people seem to think they can erect these little crosses on public property and keep them on the spot for ages.

5. I'm not against...

...putting up a cross, or some other religious symbol, beside a road where someone has died recently. I don't think it can stay there indefinitely, but I don't think its a terrible thing, even though it is technically a religious symbol on public property.

In this case, however, the state was intimately involved with the purchase, construction, and placement of the crosses, emblazoned with the Utah dept. of transportation logo.

To me, the American Atheists are justified in suing the state under the establishment clause.

7. ITA.
And I think limits need to be spelled out for people so they'll know they are being treated just like everyone else.

9. My understanding is that the crosses were paid for
privately, by members and family members of the Utah Highway Patrol. They have the UHP logo on them, because they are honoring troopers who died in the line of duty. But they're privately-made and paid-for.

I agree with you: it shouldn't be permanent. It's fine for a while.

12. Yep
Now here in Tennessee on the highway I do see memorials that are on the side on the grass and not in the way. That's fine with me personally. And than there's this road down from where I live where someone was killed infront of a drug store and on the side on the grass there is a cross. I have no problem with those type of situations. And my preacher once did a great lesson about how now days Christian's are so into the cross necklaces and stuff but back in Jesus' day when he was crucified, or anyone for that matter, it was extremley painful and humiliating. It wasn't something you were proud of and wore around your neck and he said in this sermon he never liked the cross necklaces. I used to wear one but I don't anymore after thinking about that.

6. Well, to tell you the truth, I don't see a problem with a memorial
if putting up a few crosses to commemmorate the dead is a bad thing, then why did so many think that Arlington West was such a good idea there in Camp Casey?

13. What's different?
Dead soldiers are different from dead troopers how? Do we honor one and not honor the other? Have these state troopers done something that we wouldn't want to honor?

I know some atheists who don't think this is an issue that atheists should be making a big stink about. Most of the usenet group, alt.atheism, when I hung there, thought this was a bad issue to go after, and gave their cause a bad name.

What's next, crosses in cemeteries?

17. hey how about leaving the damn crosses alone AND be pissed
bush is spying on us and getting his ass impeached. i know people have the right to challenge these things. i think it is silliness to challenge these things, and the few that do give the fundie right the ammunition to say stupid ass stuff like this. so what there are crosses on side of road. people all over the nation put little crosses on the hiway where there have been accidents. dont care about the religous aspect, dont like seeing all the crosses cause is a reminder someone lost there life the same spot i am on driving 70 mph. but i am not gonna tell them to quit putting crosses up because they lost someone they love and this is their way of homoring it. just enough
