What is this obsession with 2008?
I've seen Zogby polls on it. I read on DU people who are pushing Clark, Feingold, Kerry, Gore, Obama, Edwards (my fave) and others for '08. We haven't even had the 2006 elections yet. We have no idea who will be around to run in '08 or even who will be interested in the job. I'm sort of curious as to why people are so fascinated with an election that is more than 2 1/2 years away, while an election with so many Governors races, the Senate races and all the House races is less than 1 year away.

6. You're darn right they are!
The Repubs are already looking to rebrand themselves as the progressive party. Check this out:

Everything old is Republican again?
When conservative policy makers talk to each other it’s important to listen, because they don’t think you are. What are they saying about the Republican Party now?

It's rather lengthy but I think the article I looked at from neocon Adam Wolfson on the conservative Claremont Institute site is quite telling about what strategy they're looking to pursue. If you don't want to read what I wrote, at least take a look at that article.

3. It's a glamour thing.
The Presidency is a big deal to people. They don't realize that we can accomplish A LOT by focussing on House, Senate, and local races. It's also the "armchair politico" effect. There are an awful lot of people on DU who like to TALK about politics and not enough people on here who want to get out and actually blockwalk and flyer and hold fundraisers and work hard on a campaign.

5. Maybe because getting screwed twice raises the desire to win.
Maybe some feel their choice wouldn't have been screwed or maybe screwed up. The Presidency is the "Finals", or the big Bowl.

7. Okay that's why you focus on it
and your point is legit. But, why does Zogby and Gallup feel the need to run polls on it? They seem to run more polls on that then they do on Senate races, the Iraq Occupation, etc.

10. I don't think it's me.
I think it is the population in general and that is who they are marketing to. Some people don't watch baseball until the World Series, or football until the Superbowl. I could be wrong but it seems to me that is how our culture has developed. Another example would be people who don't go to movies until the Oscar nominations.

I think many political-junkies are like sports-junkies...and it's all about the race...the stats... the adversarial positions...the bob, duck, and weave of it all.

12. America is a winner-take-all primitive society
Fixation on the president is not only silly, it ignores the reality of power in Washington. Still, just as every movie has to be an Academy Award contender, the focus on the star is endemic to our society. If you're not number one, you're a loser.

The craving for aristocracy is a sad human reality, and the only forms of royalty in this country are money and fame. Nothing matters but being number one, and this idiocy permeates every level of our society. Since we don't culturally believe in peers, everything needs to be fought into the mud with only one triumphing.

Real power lays elsewhere, and the dementia filters down throughout the whole system. Just as too much emphasis is put on who becomes president, too much is brought to bear on the Senate. The House is--and should be--more important.
