Can the UN help the American people?
Let me preface this by saying I am not a scholar by any means. Is there any legal precedence, or do we need any to go directly to the UN and ask for help on the grounds that our human rights are being violated? Do we have a case against Bush for genocide? (re: our troops, 9/11 mihop) Even if we can get no recourse from going to the UN as a people, wouldn't it send a message to the world that most Americans do not really support this administration?

1. Boy, this topic is gonna set off the Black UN helicopters ERW fringe
You know, the Nuke Canada crowd.

Eventually, we'll have to prosecute some top Bush Administration officials for torture or the world is bound to under the Torture Convention.

2. Who is "we"? You gonna ask Negroponte to plead your case to them (the UN)?

3. Let's take care of it ourselves, American People can help American People

It's our country, it's our government, and those who inhabit its offices are our employees and servants. They just have problems remembering that sometimes, so we need to provide them with a little education, in the sense of they need to get taught. We have moved too far from the central American (as in centrality, not south of the border) principle that government is by, of and for the people, that it is just an extension of, and expression of the will of, the people. If we don't like it, it is up to us to change it, and if there are problems that persist and continue to bother us, then maybe that's an indicator that we need to prioritize addressing them over being good wage earners, acquiring consumer comforts, etc. Otherwise we will just be well-off (for the time being) slaves. Of our peers. And I haven't met anyone yet who merited master status... Instead of looking for the UN to be a nanny, why don't we take matters into our own hands as the Founders intended, and fulfill our legal role, that of the public, in our nation's structure. It's ours, and it exists only because of and for us. We the people. Government, society and business exist only to serve our interests. Let's all remember that and then act accordingly. It ain't a representative democracy for nothing.

4. I understand your thinking
but that kind of action would cause this country to implode then explode, in my opinion.

We are not on our last legs, we don't need rescuing. We have a situation that we can handle on our own.

5. the UN the UN?
.................the UN? The boys in the blue helmets couldn't stop the Rwandan genocide, the killing in Darfur, ethnic cleaning in Bosnia and Kosovo. It has done nothing about countries that are just large gulags: North Korea, Myanmar, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Vietnam.

By all means complain - just get in line with the other oppressed nations. Tell the Tibetan representative, whose culture is being systematic destroyed, how bad it is the US, inform the women of Saudi Arabia the plight of women's rights here, or you could complain to the dissidents of Uzbekistan who face political repression how distasteful you find the Patriot Act.

6. The UN would only take "request" from "official" representatives
of the US Government.

I wrote the UN back in 2000. They told me any request for help must come from an "official" party "within" the government.
