Socialist tide soars in US backyard
A new wave of socialist democracy is seizing Latin America, with left-wing presidents in power or poised to win elections in the coming months.

Next year, voters will choose leaders in nine countries, from Nicaragua to Chile, in a show of democratic integrity unthinkable in the 1980s, when military dictatorships and civil wars blighted the region.

But the left-wing governments being elected are anathema for the Bush Administration in the US, which regards socialism in its backyard a threat to its interests.

.......

Latin America's left is eyeing potentially its biggest prize in Mexico, a trade partner of Washington which is under growing focus in the US debates on immigration and security.

Left-wing former mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador heads opinion polls for July 2 elections to replace Vicente Fox, who cannot stand again. Voters are disenchanted with a tepid economy under Fox.

1. I love it....
Socialist South America on one side, liberal Canada on the other... and blue states on both coasts and the Great Lakes. Your days are numbered, red America.

3. That's great, but I really detest the expression "US backyard".
I've been reading it for decades. A backyard is usually something that you own, isn't it? I don't care how the US act all over the world, though: You RIGHTFULLY OWN nothing but the US. That should be quite enough, now.

4. Well, that's why this is a story.
For decades now we basically have owned them. Now they're saying, "no more."

7. And here they thought they'd gotten rid of all that
I've heard folks crow about what Reagan did, defending Iran Contra because it got rid of all the Latin American commies.

Oopsie.
